This is one of our all-time favorite how-tos and it comes from longtime Apartment Therapy reader Art. Way back when, he sent in this fun project as an entry in our January Jumpstart contest. He called it the "I'm Bringing Sticky Back" Doggie Bed Project and it's an easy solution for making a cozy spot for your pet with NO SEWING required...
Project: Flokati Doggie Bed
Time: One Hour
Cost: $47.
Tools and Resources:
One pair of scissors, two 12' boxes of sticky back velcro (with a little bit left over at the end), optional superglue, one Ikea Flokati wool rug, one Ikea Gosa Vila 26 x 26 pillow stuffer and a tape measure.
Step by Step:
1. Lay rug upside down on the floor
2. Measure all 4 sides of the rug and determine the half way mark of the rug (the point where the rug creases when folded in half.
3. Measure and cut lengths of fuzzy sticky back velcro to cover the three sides of one half of the underside of the rug.
4. Measure and cut lengths of scratchy sticky back velcro to cover the other three sides of the other half of the underside of the rug.
5. Remove the sticky back velcro backing and adhere the velcro to the underside of the rug.
6. Lay the pillow on one half of the underside of the rug and fold the other end of the rug over the pillow while crimping the velcro together to seal the pillow up like a giant ravioli.
7. Place your small to medium dog on the pillow and watch them sleep.
Thanks, Art!

Can you wash that and what about the lent in the dryer/ Also, the fibers from the rug sticking to your dogs nose and eyes? I would not have the rug version with a dog let alone a rug version made as a dog bed.
I see the potential for filth. How does that stuff wash up?
Hey, it's that cute Porkchop!
These are great for indoor dogs that don't shed.
After an initial pee on the flokati rug, our yorkie loved to chew bones on it. :x I don't have the rug on the floor anymore.. maybe this is a way I can make some use out of it instead of tossing it..
What a coincidence. My dog just won the rug war a few days ago and has been enjoying her new bed tremendously.
For some reason she LOVED sleeping, rolling, and drooling on my beautiful flokati rug. You can machine wash it, but it will end up matted and kind of gross-looking. I gave up and tossed it in her slumber corner, in effect giving her a $120 bed.
Hey, hey! It's still a favorite with Porkchop!

(little secret--it's only been washed a couple of times--the pillow that is)
It's been her favorite mobile bed (car, folks' house, our house, friends' house, dog-sitter) since day 1!
"seal the pillow up like a giant ravioli"
Art, the consummate chef! ;-)
Fun project (not to mention adorable dog)!
Just made a similar dog bed but covered it with a nice warm beige tone piece of polar fleece: Hancock fabrics, 3 bucks, easy to wash, no lint, soft for my dog.
Our dogs sleep on one of these rugs (yes, they won, too) and we wash it with a little Eucalan in the machine and hang it to dry. Once it's dry, we brush it and, although it's nowhere near as lovely as it was originally, it gets clean, gets some of its loft back and the pooches seem fine with it.
It's hard to tell where the dog stops and the rug starts! :)
my hounds love flokati! unfortunately its to play tug o' war so my flokati and sheepskin attempts at making them dog beds have all ended in disaster. I gave up and just order them by the case from the cheapest place i can find on the net. we go through a bed a month. :( My dogs are soooo disrespectful of any sort of stylish decor! but i love them anyway.
My dogs won the Flokati war, too. I always wanted a flokati, but when I finally got one my dogs just peed on it constantly. I think it's like grass to them. I washed it at the laundromat in one of those big washers, but it got really matted after a few times. Had to throw it out.
my black flokati shed even more than my dog!! and was impossible to maintain.
finally retired the flokati, it was too much of a headache, snug though it was.
My dog is so well-behaved and I made her a flokati bed.
Well she got horribly terribly sick and barfed on it. I cleaned it. She barfed some more. At some point I just threw it out. That was a tough part of her life. She is apparently allergic to most dog foods.
Now that we have solved the stomach issues, I am thinking of getting her a sheep skin. I have two and she likes to lay on them. I thought that maybe since she was a border collie she would protect them or something. She just lays on them. I want her to have her own bed but apparently my bed is just fine for her. haha
@msjessiemeghan:
That story was great, thanks :)
Uh... great=told in a way that made me LOL
Not great that your dog was sick. Just in case it wasn't clear :)
I may want to try this with my pooch. He's already ruined the flokaki by peeing on it. So perhaps I'll wash it and make a bed out of it. At least the rug will serve some purpose
You can toss a small natural flokati right into the washing machine, no problem. Just don't ever use bleach or Oxyclean on it... cool/warm wash and air dry. They wash up beautifully.
