Growing up, our family’s composting system consisted of a compost heap enclosed with a fence. Nothing fancy, but it did the job. It wasn’t until recently that we started seeing manufactured compost bins, many of which are, in our opinion, not all that great looking and can be pricey. That’s we’re excited about this DIY combining our love of reused pallets and composting…

As soon as I get some land, this is the first thing I am building.
Great idea! I've tried this out and works fine. Made in fifteen minutes and with zero costs. Here people throw away shipping pallets and you just have to pick them.
I built a pig pen entirely out of shipping pallets and a few fence posts for support..worked great.
It always cracks me up when people talk about keeping animals out of the compost. The very spacing needed to keep it aerated is just about the size to allow small critters in. Even if you don't put meat scraps into a compost pile there will always be critters in there at night. I find the debris they've tossed around on the ground next day but not frequently enough to be concerned. Last night I surprised a juvenile skunk who'd clambered up onto the top of the pile. I'm sure the raccoon mother introduces her brood to the pile each year, too. As long as they don't bother me during the daytime and they're not pigs about it I don't really mind.
