Always a wall, never a mantel? Well, I think you just caught a DIY bouquet.
I flipped when I saw this Stacked Wood Fireplace Mantel by Small Notebook for a Simple Home. All you mantel-less dwellers, you must read on!
Inspired by an Anthropolgie store display, this mantel is a random assortment of 18 pieces of different colored wood with a chocolate linen center. The stacked boards are nailed together and then mounted to two long boards which are affixed to studs in the wall. Such a lovely architectural statement, that would transition easily though the seasons.

Thanks for the inspiration Doug & Rachel!

I may have to try this, but build it around my flat screen tv and put in the "fireplace" dvd for the winter.

That's a brilliant idea - I hope you do it and post pix!
Never mind the mantel -- who thought of using a knit cap as a tree topper? Beautiful cap, great idea!
I knit a different cap for the tree every year :)
@cremedela Just came in to say the same thing... Love it. Googling "kids+knit ski hat" now.
I love the orange garland! How do you make that?
<3 the knit hat atop the tree!

I seem to recall a DIY from last holiday season using dried orange slices...
...perhaps AT will consider posting more DIY holiday decor this year?
great use of reclaimed material and would also look fantastic paint out white
Not so much. I think this look is way too busy and cluttery. Maybe if the ends were cut even and the whole thing stained lightly to make the overall look a bit more tied together -- but this way the stripes would always bother me. To each his own, though.
I'm with SherryBinNH, it wouldn't work in my particular home.
However...I am really tempted to use it at work!!! I work at a thrift store for home improvement, and this would be the PERFECT holiday decor for us :-)
The folks who style the store displays and windows at Anthropologie (and Urban Outfitters) are geniuses and I am frequently in awe of what they come up with.
BTW, for those wondering about how to use orange slices in holiday decor:
