One Minute Tip: How to Make Felted Gift Toppers

Apartment Therapy Videos

Today is the day everyone heads into the bedroom with their paper, tape and scissors. Closing the door, they then begin to put paper around all the wonderful presents they plan to give tomorrow morning. But as the presents get covered up, they seem to become anonymous and want a personal touch yet again. Here's the simplest of all our Holiday How To's, in which Ashley shows us how to cut natural shapes out of felt to "top off" your presents. Enjoy! (And hey, print your own paper with our Potato Print How To here).

Closing the door, they then begin to put paper around all the wonderful presents they plan to give tomorrow morning. But as the presents get covered up, they seem to become anonymous and want a personal touch yet again. Supplies:

1. Wool felt
2. Scissors
3. Chalk pencil
4. Natural images printed on paper or leaves and paper
5. Felt ball acorns - optional

1. Either print out leaf shapes found online (like above) or collect leaves and trace onto paper. You can do other shapes as well, but natural shapes are particularly pleasing!

2. Cut out your paper leaf and trace its image directly onto the felt using a chalk pencil. You can use an ordinary pencil or pen, but chalk pencils allow you to erase the lines very easily.

Ta da! you can see Ashley's traced leaf image on the felt here.

3. Cut out your felt leaf, being careful to cut inside the line if you can't erase them.

4. Apply to the top of your presents with tape, hot glue or by sewing onto ribbon. Here you can see that two leaves in different colors are particularly nice and with felt ball acorns they go even further. See the link here for How To Make Felt Ball Acorns
