How To Make an LED Ornament

We're geeks at heart, but there are some things we like to keep with tradition. One of those things are ornaments, but we understand that some of you may be inclined to bring your fir to the 21st century. Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories features a tutorial on their site on how to make a micro-readerboard ornament that displays one of 36 short messages, like, ""no peeking at the presents," one letter at a time. To make the holidays even easier, a kit with all the fixin's to make your own LED ornament is available via the Make Store, for $15. Fifteen phrases are included, plus you can enable holiday messages.

The kit comes with comic book-style instructions and a preprogrammed microcontroller. Programming isn't required, but you can play around with source code if you want.
