Q: I live in a 1 bedroom apartment with a home office with my boyfriend and a friend. My boyfriend and I got the home office, so… no windows. The room isn't tiny, and we've arranged it quite nicely to work for two people. However...

...the wall that is perpendicular to the door, and opposite the bed, has a strange feature: a large overhang with a built-in cubby space. It hangs out over the A/C unit, and has quite a bit of space inside. Currently, we are using it store off-season clothing in bins, but mostly, it has accumulated knickknacks. My boyfriend wants to turn it into a small closet for his shirts, but I think we can do better. What do you recommend for this bizarre room feature? We love the apartment and are determined to make the most of the setup.

In this post d'AT: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/diy-headboard-i-141562, take a look at number four. As far as you have not window, it could help with the light.
This is not what you're looking for, but it's most likely illegal in your state for a room without windows to be considered a sleeping space. Legality aside, it's just not safe.
What if you got the Ikea brackets, replace the shelf with rough hewn wood and made a little bookshelf (or if you're not into books, anything you want to display).

The wood would add some interest and character and it could be stained to match the rest of your furnishings.
If your BF just wants it for his shirts; that means you must have the larger closet or storage space. Let him have this 'battle'.
use a big picture to cover the hole. If you don't have one, go to goodwill. or get a big blank canvas from michaels and paint it or use it as is.
I am with @rmbnn & your boyfriend. Continue to use it to store the bins and let the BF use the exposed section to hang his shirts. That's just more room for your stuff where you guys keep your clothes now.
I also think you should put a tension rod & curtain in the cubbyhole opening so you can disguise this storage area. Make sure to pick something you like because you should be looking at it a lot more than the shirts!
it sound like you need a place for shirts, so shirts. Thinks of it this way, you are so out of ideas you are soliciting ideas for strangers.
using a simple piano hinge, you can make any number of unique 'doors' to cover the opening...
fabric over canvas stretchers, a framed painting to fit...any number of options.
How is it a bizarre feature? It is built-in storage. Let BF put his shirts there.
I would hang artwork on the blank wall to the left, and I would take everything out of the nook on the right and put a small shelf for books and a basket for toiletries. That is not a good nook for shirts, though, too high and they will just look messy. Put a small dresser UNDER that area for his shirts (one that doesn't block the A/C).
You want to stop the visual clutter that you have going on right now, so either make it a neat shelving area, or put a small hinged door on the area. Or maybe a large basket that holds off-season things or sweaters. Just say no to a curtain.
Another vote for the BF shirts. Not everything has to be designed.
I concur. :-)
I would be more pragmatic - use it to store your fire extinguishers and maybe an ax or two! Oh, and some of those really nice oven mitts, the ones fire fighters use.
Yikes. This is not a bedroom... ^^What Gooddog said.
