There's a stretch of wall in my dining area that has been crying out for decoration for about two years now. Finally, I couldn't look at the blank expanse of wall any longer so I set about to fill it with something fun, colorful and art-y.
Creating the wall of plates in my dining room was inexpensive and covered a lot of space. And, aside from drying time between paint coats, it was pretty quick, too.
I started with eleven mismatched plates I picked up at a thrift store. First, I sprayed each one with primer. I'm a big believer in primer when it comes to spray painting, especially when painting an odd material like dinnerware. After letting the primer dry for a few hours, I sprayed one coat of paint on the face of each plate. I then let them dry overnight.
The next day I decided I'd probably need to paint the rim of the underside of the plates so that the original color wouldn't show around the edges. After painting the undersides, I flipped the plates and applied the second coat the top side of the plates.
When the plates were completely dry, I took them to the dining room and decided on a layout. I did this by laying the plates out on the floor before I started hanging them on the wall. Once I was satisfied with a layout, I started hanging the plates.
I originally thought I would need to buy eleven plate racks to hang them on the wall but then I came up with a better idea - eventually. First I tried to hot glue fishing line to the backs of the plates. Unfortunately, the fishing line was too fine and slippery for the glue so it wouldn't stay in place. Then, I hot glued twist ties to the backs of the plates to use as hangers. The twist ties were the magic solution!

cool idea! I'm assuming these are all ceramic plates. Do you have any ideas for hanging melamine plates? Will hot glue stick to the plastic if I try the twisty tie idea?

Since melamine is lighter than ceramic, would liquid nails, or even regular super glue hold? Not sure, but I'd at least look into what they say. :)

Just a Little Bit
I don't think hot glue and melamine would be a good mix. Since melamine plates are so lightweight I would agree that liquid nails or even duct tape might work.
Good idea, but I think the visual interest would be enhanced with different patterns versus solid color. That said, I certainly applaud the outcome!
This shows that the color peach can look great with the right color pairings! I think its ready for a come back....
I think the visual interest would be increased tenfold with various colors and patterns versus one solid color. That being said, I applaud the outcome!
Sorry...not sure how comment ended up posted twice!
The twist ties are a stroke of genius! Regarding the melamine plates, I agree with the others that hot glue might warp or melt the plates. Liquid Nails or Gorilla Glue is probably the answer.
For the melamine plates, I would suggest using the command adhesive strips for hanging pictures. They will hold the way and no damage to the walls.
Love it. I'm stealing this idea at once!
I have hung glass plates with a hot glue gun and ribbon before. They didn't stay hung very long. I suggest finding a different method or else you are going to have material for a nice mosaic.
There are also disc hangers that you can wet and stick onto the back of plates. I have a plate collage with lots of different kinds in my kitchen and I love how it cheers up the space!

i can't really be the only one who thinks this is a stupid and ugly idea...
I'm tired of old plates on the wall. I'm tired of owls and pine cones and knitted rock cosies. I'm tired of terrariums in lightbulbs and drawings of big-eyed girls wearing bunny ears playing with fawns. I'm tired.
mmq- I wouldn't use such strong words and I do like the idea in general, but I think the color pairing is really odd.
@Kozy11: Chairgal is right. I have Thomas Paul melamine plates hanging on the wall in my kitchen, and I used 3M tape. I used the velcro kind to allow a little bit of adjustment with placement.
Thanks everyone! I bought some melamine Poketo plates that I saw on here and had no clue how to hang them. I appreciate your feedback.
I think it's a great idea, just not sure about the hangers. Try those new hangers for sheetrock that you can remove without blemishing the sheetrock. They have a strip you pull for easy removal.
I love this idea, people have been decorating their walls with plates for generations, it is one of the few ways we can decorate the way our grandparents did and not end up with a dated looking result. Timeless, chic, unique and personal all in one. MMQ- sorry to hear that you have such low standards and poor taste, but please refrain from polluting comment threads with such negative input. It doesn't help anyone, I think we would all likely agree that insulting contributions are the only ugly and stupid things here.
Has anyone tested the paint as far as durability? Does it rub off, scratch off, etc?
