One detail we've always loved about our Mac laptops is the glow of the Apple logo on the top cover, offering an easy to check indicator whether our machine is on or off, while also turning you into an effective walking billboard for Apple every time you open up your machine out in public. It's always surprised us Apple has never taken the detail over to the mobile side (likely for power consumption reasons), but there's now an aftermarket conversion kit to make your iPhone's logo glow just like its big brother...
Here's a video of the conversion kit and DIY process, which seems fairly simple and includes all required tools in the kit (Phillips-head Screwdriver, Pentalobe Screwdriver, 3M sticker, forceps), and requires just 8 steps:

- Remove the 2 screws flanking the iPhone's dock connector port
- Slide open and remove the rear panel
- Remove the 5 screws near the flash
- Lift up the power connector of the screen
- Position the light panel, then connect and mount it using the 3M sticker (details provided on the installation page)
- Replace the 5 screws near the flash
- Slide on the included rear panel with the transparent logo (so that the light is visible through it)
- Replace the 2 remaining screws flanking the dock connector port
Available at LightMyiPhone.com for $49.99 (it's nice to see the price has dropped from the original manufacturer's $79.950 price).

I strongly recommend against this kit. I purchased it at the higher price, but it would have been worth it if it was as seamless as they claimed. Not only did the install take about 4 hours to get right (I tend to mod electronics regularly, so I'm not challenged in this area), but the backlight comes on every time any app makes a data request in the background, meaning the light turns on randomly, puts off a lot of heat, and decreases battery life.
On top of that, the rear panel is super thin to make room, but it doesn't make enough room so it bulges out slightly, and light escapes out the sides of the back panel, and into the camera.
I would LOVE to have a kit that worked well, but unfortunately this is not one. If anyone knows of any kits that work much better, please let me know!
Evan.H: thanks for sharing your hands-on feedback. You might have helped someone save $49.99, or perhaps inspired someone else to design/create a better made version!
that video is horrible. maybe having the camera at a different angle- bird's eye, or directly in front would've allowed for you to actually see what he was doing instead of just seeing the top of his hand.
Way to void the warranty. I wouldn't be surprised to see this feature in the iPhone 5, assuming they could find a way to run it without compromising the battery life.
It's cute!
It never claimed to enhance battery life, double the warranty or be perfect. There's a reason why it wasn't made as a factory feature. On the other hand, I'm super happy that 1. the mod is there for THOSE willing to go thru the install and void their warranty 2. Apple hasn't tried to shut them down yet (like they did with the white-case mod), and 3. there are people out there who'd alter their phones and add their own geeky / alternative twist to something that already looks beautiful. So let them do it, make better install videos, encourage modding, create better kits, DON'T JUST _____ ABOUT IT! :)
