great ideas...I take my own glad bags and a huge jute bag to put in those glad bags after billing...though i felt better about not usig those flimsy bags hung ove rthe produce section...i used to feel guilty for using glad bags....( i have been using twelve of them over the last two years)...i hae been working on making my own cotton based bags ..but i was not sure if the super markets would allow me to use them...seeing this post..i m motivated!

I was a cashier in a grocery store for ten years, so please believe me when I suggest that people NOT bring their own reusable produce bags.

The inside of your grocery cart, the conveyor belt, the cashier's hands, the bagger's hands, have all been nicely contaminated by dripping meat packages, leaking milk, and/or filthy sick children in leaky diapers.

It is impossible for these surfaces to be constantly sanitized.

Fabric produce bags and wet produce will make the bag act as a sponge, absorbing icky germs and viruses.

Do put ALL your produce in a bag (even melons and bananas) but please use plastic and do not reuse them.

Grocery stores are FAR MORE filthy than restaurants, also.

ohjodi, that makes a lot of sense - not to mention that the cashiers handling those bags are also handling cash, and the cashier can't see what is in an opaque bag without opening it.

Those are very cute bags, but I'm not sure they are practical.
