So, you were inspired by the transparent screens posted earlier this week. Wanna make your own? Well, before you go snapping photos behind your screen, check out this twist to the digital trompe l'oeil.
Designer and illustrator Delphine (a.k.a. del4yo) whose tablet cover we posted about a month ago, wrote a great tutorial on her blog Non Dairy Diary. The step-by-step instructions not only guide you though how to make a transparent screen, but how to make one that includes a layer of adorable illustrations -- creating a Who Framed Roger Rabbit effect of drawings living in the real world right in your home office.
Delphine even offers up her adorable bird illustrators free to use if you want to mimic her adorable desktop, plus she uploaded a textured white wall image to use if you don't want to (or can't) take a stellar shot of the white wall behind your desk.
One of the highlights of Delphine's tutorial is her explanation of how to create shadows behind the layer of bird illustrations -- key to creating a 3-D like desktop that makes you want to reach in and pet one of the birdies!

Shaw's Original Fir...
How much energy does it consume to use these screen savers? I know that sometimes your computer is unable to go into a sleep mode (which uses less energy) because of the screen saver. I'm asking for myself, and because Apartment Therapy seems to favor eco-friendly products and ideas.
But wouldn't the shadows possibly change over the course of a day? Well at least if your computer is near a window.
@JoyAdams: It wouldn't use any more energy than the monitor normally uses. I don't actually think this is a screen saver either. It's just a desktop image. You'd have one of those anyway. Even if you did use this a screen saver, you can change the settings on your computer to go into sleep mode after a certain amount of time even if it is in screen saver. It's easy, my computer turns off after 2 hours of inactivity when plugged in and when on battery, it goes to sleep in 10 minutes and turns off after 30. It does this even if the screen saver is on. In fact, the screen saver will always have turned on by then.
