I'm always on the look out for creative ways of mending things, and after coming across these photos from Martha Stewart on mending knitted items, it really inspired me to re-think my mending routine. I love the idea that the colourful thread is showcasing the fact that the sweater is mended, and it looks really great! Much better than those faded distressed jeans you can get. Genuine wear and patching is so much more interesting!

She suggests using a thin mohair yarn, which will match the weight of the knitted fabric. See the full tutorial here
She also includes tips on darning, how to fix a pulled thread, how to save a button hole from fraying , and how to sew a button.

Shaw's Original Fir...
This is a really great idea! Thanks for posting.
I feel like doing this to sweaters that don't even have anything wrong with them! What kind of yarn could be used in place of mohair?
veggiemar - any yarn that is the same weight as what is already there should work. Most thinner sweaters will probably require lace-weight, while heavier winter sweaters will probably use a worsted weight or even a bulky yarn. If you know of a yarn shop in your area, you could probably take the sweater you want to mend in and they can guide you in the same direction. And don't forget to get a washable yarn if you launder the sweater in the machine.
Sorry, meant they can guide you in the *right* direction. Need coffee!
Huzzah for mending!
