We never seem to find a soft, grassy meadow for our picnics and usually wind up a on a damp, pebble-strewn patch of thin grass which is not the best match for our light-weight, peach-colored picnic cloth. If we didn't have such a sentimental attachment to it (rescued from our mother's garage sale years ago) we would definitely have a go at this oilcloth picnic mat tutorial.

Picnicking the day after a rain storm won't be a problem and neither will drips, spills or toddler drool with wipeable, waterproof oilcloth.

Oilcloth Addict walks you through making this picnic mat with instructions and photos. Hers is 16 sq. feet, but you can certainly make a smaller one if that works better for you. She even got fancy and added charming floral oilcloth applique.
