Q: My boyfriend and I hauled this baby off the curb and are currently trying to make plans for it. He doesn’t like the idea of a headboard because he is scared of the glass breaking. What else can we do with this beautiful find?

Sheex Bedding
If you had a piece of glass cut to fit over the entire thing, it would make a beautiful and rustic desk top.Or you could also attach shelves to the lower rectangular sections, paint the back of the glass something lovely, and put a light behind the glass, making it a self contained hallway/entryway organizer of sorts.
Use it as a room divider. Or, place it against the wall near your front or back door, attach a small shelf to the front of it, and use it as catch all center for your keys, wallet, etc. Use dry erase markers on the glass as a message center....just a thought
you could use it as a a movable barrier for opening and closing an entranceway at the entry point of a building or room....
This tour on design sponge features one just propped up in a corner. Looks gorgeous!
Check out the door bookshelf in pic three, a very novel idea I never would have thought of http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/dc/style-envy-not-your-average-bookshelves-151108
I would replace the windows with mirrors, and somehow attach a low-profile shelf just under them. A few hooks hung along the sides, something cool and antique-looking, maybe mis-matched, too. Then I'd mount it somewhere near my front hall to use as a landing strip/coat tree.
@ThatDogGuy - Genius idea! You're on to something!
I used a door as a buffet table in the kitchen for about a year.
I had one and I sprayed the glass with mirror spray paint (some kind of paint that basically looks like old mecury glass mirrors) and had it out in my garden, very cute! brightened up a shady corner.
thats a great door! I would prop it in the corner keep the glass and put pictures behind it like a make shift picture frame
It actually would make an interesting lighting piece. Perhaps refinish the door in a way that you would like. Frost the glass. Place white LED Christmas, or rope-lights behind the glass. Hang in an area where you've always wanted a little more ambient light and enjoy! If you're happy with the finish already, this should take you all of 1hr to do.
ThatDogGuy is the WINNER!
Fantastic find!
I'd be inclined to use it in the garden, maybe propped up against a wall or fence, and just let it weather.
Or, maybe mount it on an interior wall. I like kblais820's idea, too!
HALL TREE!!! AT featured some hall trees made from old doors before, and they look awesome! You could just replace the glass with mirror pieces, or even just 2 of the panels.
picture frame? photo in each pane...
You could turn it into a coffee table of some sort. I do like the idea of turning the glass into mirrors.
My dad built this for us (third pic down): http://wp.me/p10xGE-g1
If you didn't already have inspiration for it, it's just junk. And sorry, I just don't think it's such a great door. These are great doors.
Looks like this homeowner split an old door to frame her doorway: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fxc7I2Wov9Y/S7ZqKD4xyJI/AAAAAAAABMA/s7PbL8OIWdQ/s1600/13-FR+to+kitchen+old+doors.JPG
These are great garden doors:

This owner made slide doors (like pocket doors, but on the walls, not in them walls):

How about a coat tree and message board?
Cut it in half and use the top half as a window or mirror or picture frame. It's not so great of a door as to bother keeping it as a door.
Get two more and make a folding screen from them
You could still use it as a headboard if you took the glass out. It would be open, but glass is see-through anyway, right?
thanks everyone! a lot of good ideas, and a few commenters who really didn't need to leave their sarcastic comments.
we did end up making it into a headboard, mostly because we wanted to make use of it. our living situation changed and we wouldn't be able to have it anywhere but our bedroom. but i'm really happy with it, even if it is just a rustic door that inspired me. here's the 'after' picture:

I really like what you did with it, la.woman, and I like the door itself, too. I don't know why some people chose to be insulting. Gotta love the internet. Did you wind up replacing the glass, or leaving it?
I like what Cordelia's dad made.
JEEZ, urbancricket. You don't have to know what you're going to do with something right away.
Headboards are played out, I vote halltree.
bepsf read my mind
...junk it...it' s really not worth the time and agony to create something out of garbage...
Does anyone worry about lead paint on an old door like this? We're renovating an old house and have replaced many doors that were so far from square we wanted to redo. I keep thinking of projects for the old ones but am nervous about the lead because I have a toddler and am pregnant. Thoughts? Ideas on sealing them?
@citygirlsf - thanks! I am quite lucky to have such a handy dad.
LOL @ThatDogGuy!
We found a free door with 15 glass panels from a house tear-down dating 1929. We're going to refinish and use it to replace the solid door separating the dining room from the living room because it allows light to pass through and will provide reflection and friendly twinkle when candles are going. Should open up the space and make a huge difference in the enjoyment of our home. To the homeowner it was definitely garbage - to me it's a treasure.
