Get out the cigars and pop the champagne because craft savant Katie Steuernagle has birthed a new craft! It's the granddaughter of traditional rug hooking and the way cooler cousin of those latch hook kits you probably started (and abandoned) when you were twelve.

Katie calls it "rug mod" and it's a fairly ingenious way to embellish rugs with any design you want. To get started she used one of those inexpensive carpet tiles you can buy for a few bucks, but of course you could go whole hog (or is it hog wild?) and tackle a larger rug. Unlike rug hooking or latch hook, you're just doing the embellished portion instead of the background so this won't kill your creative spirit with the tedium.

Visit Katie at her always fun, always inspiring blog Matsutake where she hooks you up (hardy har har) with a photo tutorial.
