Q: I just bought a dozen vintage mason jars, but the metal screw bands look dull and grungy. Is there any way to clean them to bring back the shine of the metal?

I don't know about polishing, but you can buy new lids and rings where you get canning supplies if the jars are a standard size.
I would try cleaning them with white toothpaste .. it's usually good at getting grime off of metals. :)
Unfortunately, you're really not going to be able to return the shine to those old lids and rings. The glossiness on those old lids was the result of a thin finish that wore off as they were used in boiling water processes and storage.
If you want shiny, I'd go with Dharmamama and get yourself some new lids. Otherwise, you can enjoy the patina of the vintage lids and admire them, knowing that they were well used and appreciated.
