Q: I've been on the hunt for a vanity without the side drawers to use as a desk/table/possible TV stand for a while. I just scored this puppy off Craigslist. Might have paid a little more than I should have, but it's great! I'm debating on what to do to it to refinish it. Part of me wants to strip it down and stain it ebony (the only stain color I care for). Part of me wants to take the easier route and just paint it a PB black or a high gloss black.
Part of me wants to mimic that fantastic dresser redo featured on here a while back with a natural wood top and a green body. Part of me wants to paint it more of a greyish/brown taupe color similar to Essie's holiday "Don't Sweater It" polish, or maybe just a plain grey. A totally different part of me wants to gild the bajeesus out of the legs :) My inspiration comes from that great Ikea desk that kind of looks like a vanity, as seen on Chelsea & Sean's Eclectic Painted Home tour.
Anyway, I'm looking for input on which route to take. I'm also looking for paint color suggestions, especially for a greyish brown taupe similar to the Essie color. Lastly, I'm looking for some relatively cheap sources/ideas for some new drawer pulls.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I like the idea of black. Is the piece real wood, or some sort of laminate? In any case, stripping it down to stain it is a lot of work, painting it much less. So being lazy, I would spray paint it a glossy black.
This was a nice re-do, too, featured here on AT...

I kind of like the nail polish color idea though. I can't tell you where you could get that? Maybe take a photo into the paint store? But I can share my favorite online source for drawer pulls...

Please do share your before and after when you're done!
I actually have a very similar (but kidney shaped) desk/vanity. I went the high gloss black route and LOVE it. I was planning to swap out the hardware, but after the new coat of paint, the handles really worked and I'm so glad I decided to keep them. Good luck!
If it were me, I'd paint it a color... like blue, green or pink!
GOLD!!!!!!
With a black top.
I'd probably keep the handles. Hopefully they're solid brass and have developed a lovely dark patina that just needs some clear coat.
gloss black, matte black, deep taupe, most certainly.
i'd go sleek with some stainless lansa pulls as a counterpoint to all the curviness.

I would get to cleaning it up and sanding it down a bit first to get a better idea of what kind of condition the wood is in before committing to staining it. If the wood is in good shape, I love the wood top and painted body idea. If the wood doesn't look so hot go ahead and paint it black. I recently painted a small vanity I've had for a while a high gloss black and it's quite glamorous.
I have no idea. But I have the exact same vanity in the same color. Only difference is the handles on mine are slightly more ornate. I've been trying to figure out what I want to do with it so will be anxious to read what suggestions people have for you.
Maybe all black and the parts that are darker brown you can do them in white? It'll take some time, but I'm sure the end result will look really cool and modern.
If it were me, I'd go with black paint. You might want to look into Annie Sloan Chalk Paint - I've heard good things about it and there doesn't seem to be much prep work involved. Good luck!
Silver leaf with a faux marble paint job on the top.
I have a vanity that is very similar. My mom stripped off the paint and re-stained it. A warning, the top may be a laminate, mine was. My dad ended up cutting a new piece for the top, and I trimmed that with copper leaf. If you'd like, you can see it out here. I know it's not quite what you're looking for, but it can give you an idea of what it would look like stained vs painted.
My family had a bureau from what might have been the same set. It was painted a horrid greenish cream color. My sister stripped & varnished it, and it is absolutely gorgeous.
I am wondering what room do you want it to go in and what is your decorating style? I think that it would look great in a vibrant color just as it might in black or stormy dark greyish blue with shiny new pulls.
Just so you know...I believe that is a Drexel piece from the Touraine collection...they are actually pretty collectible and you might ruin it by painting...that color is actually a great neutral with a colorful background wall.... ;)
I, too, see intense colors for this. Off-black, navy blue, chile-pepper red. Of course it's easy for me to say since I'm not the one who will be doing the work!
If it is a hardwood table, I would give it a good scrub and coat it with sans colour varnish ..that is always timeless, or not?
Pink! Hot pink for the details.
Yes, that re-do of the marble topped coffee table on AT a couple of days ago popped into my head, too. But depending on your style and color scheme, something like a vibrant red could be surprising and beautiful.
Hi there, I have this same vanity I scored at a garage sale. I decided to paint it a purple. I don't know if you started your project yet but here is my blog with my adventure!

I am no DIY-er, but I would go with the glossy black paint color; it's timeless and I think you would be happy with it for years to come. The last thing you want to do is paint it a color that you may not like in a couple of years and then have to do it all over again. I actually like the current pulls that are on it and would probably clean them very well and re-use them. Good luck to you and I hope you post an "after" picture for us!
I don't like the idea of black because it will camouflage the beautiful details. I'd totally paint it a FUN color that will pop in the room...like yellow, turquoise, orange, red...whatever makes you happy.
teal is always a great color for vintage looking peices. or sea foam green. what colors do you have in the room you want to showcase this in? You can either go with the color scheme, or go with something totally different and bold.
I'd say all of the colors that Chelsea likes for this piece would look awesome. Deciding on which one would be based more on where she would use it and with what other furniture and textiles.
Me too! I've been thinking about changing it a bit and this is perfect timing.
If it's not Drexel, it's probably Dixie. I had a whole bedroom suite of almost identical furniture. 1970s. Supposed to look French provincial. White laminate top, and "gilded" drawers and legs. If you don't like the look, paint it up. Not likely to be a valuable antique. That's probably original hardware too. The stuff was well made, but not truly fancy. I see it second-hand all over now. If it were me, though, I'd probably go either look-at-me with glossy black (with gold highlights?) or gray for something more subtle.
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint....Look at the color selections...Graphite if you like black with red for the interior drawers
Several people said gray-blue, teal, or sea foam green. How about, for this delicate, feminine piece, a blue/mint green the same shade as Tiffany Blue, with the accents painted white, and the hardware chrome for "silver?" Tiffany blue is always appropriate, for either a bedroom or nook in the living room, or even a bathroom. Red, pink, black, silver, white...all kinds of colors accent it beautifully. Have fun, and don't wait for that look to become popular again! All of us who had bedroom sets in the '70's had that look, and neither we, nor our daughters, ever want to see it again! have fun!
I also bought furniture from this "set" on craigslist and redid it. Two dressers and a nightstand for my daughter's room. Mine is now spray painted a funky chartreuse. I was originally looking for new hardware too, but I ended up spraying it a matte black (mine was gold) and it looks great! So different in a new color. I would recommend at least trying to spray your hardware first, before buying something else.
I would do a high gloss navy blue with black hardware. Or something else that is kind of loud. In a cheap piece of furniture like this, I think going the wood/stain route is a mistake. It isn't nice wood in the first place. Painting it a fun color gives it a wow factor.
I do like your gray idea too.
I have it too... did EVERYONE have one?!
I have a bedroom set that originally had a very similar paint treatment. I painted it glossy white with black accents instead of the gold. I replaced the hardware with more modern chrome handles. The result is beautiful and very old Hollywood.
I had similarly colored dresser/buffet, painted it in lacquered turquoise, the other choice was a lacquered orange, like in tory burch stores. either would make this amazing
A bold green, blue or red with brass hardware would look great
