If you're media junkies like us and have been searching for a way to streamline your digital collection for your iPad, you've probably come to realize that little slate only eats up a small number of video formats. Aside from MP4, nothing else really seems too promising. So what do you do? You find a good ol' guide to maximize your device entertainment, that's what. Here's how to convert all your videos into MP4 and stuff it with all the metadata your iPad will ever want.
TURN YOUR VIDEOS INTO MP4:
- Download Avidemux 2 (Free on OS X, BSD, Linux and Windows)
- Convert your files to MP4
- Load into iTunes
However, if you want all that fancy iPad-viewable metadata, DVD album pictures, and whatnot, you'll need to embed that stuff yourself. Here's how you...
FILL YOUR VIDEOS WITH METADATA:
- Download iFlicks (Now this one isn't free, but has a free trial)
- Load the metadata.
- Load into iTunes.
We probably make it sound much easier than it is to actually execute (and for the most part, this is true - these simple steps will require plenty of patience to fill, convert, and sync), but MacRumors has a nice little automation guide if you wanna rummage through your entire collection in one fell swoop.

You can use Subler on a Mac for Metadata - it's free

@JimD Very cool. Gotta check this one out. OSX only btw.
Just use Air Video. It's a huge time saver and has played everything in my collection so far.

I automatically converts on the fly or for formats which will be too slow to convert, this app gives you a convert and queue option.
The Air Video server works on Windows or Mac.
