Here at Apartment Therapy this month we have been talking about moving and first apartments. We recently discovered a fantastic resource---a blog devoted to "the lost art of being a man," with an article all about how to find your first apartment. While we don't feel that there are an overwhelming number of ways that the experience of moving out on your own differs for men and women, we do love this blog, and find its list of tips helpful for both sexes...
In the article, "How To Find Your First Apartment," by Shane Belin, the author tackles the issues of budgeting, searching for an apartment, and roommates--all from a male-centric perspective. We think that most of the advice given transcends gender, and it is a good starting point for anyone venturing out on their own for the first time!
We then explored the rest of this blog, and while we, ourselves, are not male, we love the tone and perspective of this site! It is not just about being "manly," but very much about preserving the characteristics of a gentleman. As a lady, we feel that we ought not complain too much about guys aspiring to be as gentlemanly as possible! Topics such as How to Make a Moleskine PDA and How to Build Sturdy Basement Shelves give some handy projects for the modern man, while articles like The Art of Letter Writing and Stationery focus on some of the more genteel and romantic aspects of gentlemanliness. And then you have the amusing hyper-manly topics like The Ultimate Push-Up Guide and Command a Room Like A Man.
In all we really enjoyed poking around this blog and think that it has a lot of practical applications for the modern gentleman. Heck, we found a lot of useful information for the gentlewoman, as well!

Hmmm---
Is the wife in the first pic concerned that the burgers are burnt....
...or that her husband is so "chummy" w/ his guy-pal that he's completely unaware that they're burnt?
There's a lot of gay subtext in that illustration.
This is funny, but I have to ask what type of man are we speaking about? My male gay male friends would be very different from my straight male friends as far as how they make choose..now that everyone I know owes their own place I am going by past experiences.
However, one of my straight male friends still has camp chairs set up in his wall to wall carpet living room, not going to attract someone that would take this post seriously..but hey he also travels to the most amazing places every OTHER month.
maybe they are talking about getting a place together.
The woman in blue just broke the news that the men are more than just friends. While woman in red reeled in shock, blue remained unphased, as she had known for years...
sounds mighty sexist.
However, that illustration just became my desktop wallpaper.
@ Bepsf & mjr:
I thought the exact same thing! I love those illustrations from the 50's. They were so homoerotic! And it didn't even phase the consumer :)
Also, the spatula is placed ever so strategically - smoker guy practically has a platter laid out for him :)
Y'all are so right: they totally look like they're about to make out.
This illustration made my day.
And that comment:
smoker guy practically has a platter laid out for him.</i
...made me snort coffee right outta my nostrils.
Life is good.

How is it sexist?
Love the illustration. Look at the ring on the blue shirt guy.. It seems he's slipping it out subtly or he's sliding it up and down.
There's also something in the picture as well. He might be bragging about how big his softballs are. Some were surprised, others were delighted, and the guy facing him on the right side of the picture is definitely daydreaming.
these comments have made my night
Love this article...some common concerns among men I know when apartment-hunting:
does it have enough outlets for my tech?
how will my enormous flat-screen look in the living room?
no dishwasher? no dice.
4walls.us is extremely guy-friendly resource. Overlooking the small details can be a deal-breaker, but these listings are so thorough that you get a solid idea of what to expect from whatever apartment you're looking at.
lol god... this seriously did make my night too! Anything would at this point, it's the first thing that's had me laugh, other than my husband trying to cheer me up from breaking my toe. New desktop wallpaper indeed!
It appears that the b/w guy is giving testament: "... put your hand under my thigh, and I will make you swear by the Lord ...." (Note: This means "put your hand under my testicles," which is the manner in which oaths were taken at the time; "testament," "testify," and "testicle" have the same root.)
Oh, good grief...this was very much the way home entertaining went--the women gathered in one area, the men in another. And we all know that men are the only ones who can barbecue, so they naturally gathered around the grill. You all remind me of those in the '50s who saw a communist in every corner! I thought the women's clothing much funnier--aprons! For outdoor dining!
