While doing research on surround sound we found an interesting podcast on Dolby's site. The podcast is hosted by Craig Eggers, a 20 year veteran in the audio field, and Jack Buser, a self proclaimed "Worldwide Technology Evangelist." These two go through exactly what you need in order to get the best surround sound at home...
Craig and Jack both talk about how often they go into people's homes and see that their surround systems are placed in the room incorrectly -- a shame when you spend $400 on six speakers. The two break down exactly where each speaker should be, going as far to giving at what degrees they should be angled at and how far they should be from your TV.
It's a quick and simple podcast that explains something you may think you have right in your house, but more than likely, don't. Surround sound is tricky, as we've noted in the past, and it's ok to get help from the experts.

Whoa... careful there, big spender!
Hmm... i spent about $400 on my surround sound speakers... about right for a mid-range audiophile. Because of space requirements, mine are not placed perfectly... *however*, my Onkyo receiver has an awesome feature called Odyssey where you put a microphone where you'll be sitting and it adjusts the speakers for the placement.
amt230, nice catch!
spinsLPs, dude that's how much decent surround sound speakers cost. I swear. I've been doing research on the matter.

And Jack is not a "self proclaimed" Worldwide Technology Evangelist. That was his actual job title.
