People often complain about the challenge of keeping food storage plastic containers organized and accessible, particularly when they're stored in deep cupboards, out of sight, multiplying like gremlins. A while ago, we devised a simple but successful system in our kitchen and have since replicated it for the clients of our organize and redesign business... To keep plastic storage bases and lids organized they need to remain highly visible and easy to reach. One of the best ways to make that happen in standard depth kitchen cupboards is to install a simple pull-out drawer so you can get a birds eye view of your supply.
We used The Container Store's medium width, 2-runner Elfa drawer, attached to an easy glide track that you just drill into the cupboard shelf. To corral the lids, we used a plastic container within the drawer, standing the lids on their sides so we can thumb through them easily to find the right match for the container. Another rule of thumb for organizing plastic containers is to NOT add every takeout or food container that comes through your house to your collection. You don't need a million containers, just enough. Check out the policies of your local recycling facility to find out which numbers you can recycle. We'd love to hear your tips for storing and organizing plastic lids and containers.
