Hudson's Jungle on a Budget

My Room

Name: Hudson (3 weeks)
Location: Southern Westchester County, NY

Hudson's nursery started to develop once I started to make my registry and noticed that everything seemed to lend itself to a jungle theme. I didn't want to go completely crazy with the jungle theme, because I wanted him to be able to grow with the room.My husband and mother-in-law painted a beautiful tree on the wall, and then we added a Curious George decal. I loved incorporating the literacy element into the room - books are so important to us and we want to pass the same love of reading onto our son.

The rest of the room came together almost on its own. We already had a bookcase, twin bed, and dresser. We didn't want to blow our budget on new furniture, so we used what we already had and made it work for Hudson's room. I printed pictures of animals from the internet and bought frames to add artwork. I made the alphabet picture above the changing table (dresser converted into changing table) from letters that I already had.

Hudson already has a huge library of books - many of mine from work that I'm not currently using. The chair was my husband's. We made it into a 'nursing station'. It's perfect for those late night feeding times. I play some classical music and Hudson eats and we relax together. The goose, Gladys Goose, is my husband's from his childhood. It was nice to be able to use it in our son's room. The beautifully hand painted wooden table that sits next to the changing table is also my husband's from childhood. It was hand painted by an artist friend of their family.

We use the mirror for tummy time. Hudson has a sensory box filled with materials that have different textures, black and white picture cards, rattles and rings. This space is great for playtime. The mat on the floor, an exercise mat that my husband no longer uses, makes it a nice soft space that is easy to clean. We opted to use the mat instead of purchasing a rug.

Thanks, Kate. Well done!
