Maybe it has to do with growing up in California and never really experiencing a white Christmas until I went to college but I am a complete sucker for what I picture as old fashioned, New England, storybook Christmases — right down to the kind of stockings I hang by my fireplace.
Actually I don't have a fireplace, so our stockings get hung near the tree! But I still was on the search for what I deemed as authentic stockings. Stockings that look like actual thick woolly socks! I found what I was looking for a few years ago from The Swell Company. The socks are long and narrow but perfect for small gifts. I've rounded up a few other sources for stockings as well including some from Etsy made from recylced sweaters. Very clever and resourceful!

White Enamel Flatwa...
They remind me of stockings the family from Willy Wonka (you know, at the beginning when they are all sleeping in one bed?) would hang over their fire...
Cute! I love it!
these type of stockings though are the worst for stuffing. Long and narrow and usually things get caught on the looping inside. Nice for looks but not good for actually putting things in
@JNS. I found some nice knit stockings at Macy's that are lined with muslin. You get the look of old school stockings (the way they should look IMO instead of those weird two sided flat things that no person would ever put on their feet) without the hassle of them stretching out and things getting snagged in the yarn.
In our family, Christmas stockings were a kids-only thing. So once my brother and I graduated high school, Mom retired our old stockings. But they were so great for stuffing small gifts into! So now our family has a new tradition: "adult stockings." They're simply wine gift bags filled with the usual stocking-stuffer fare.
Stocking are my favorite part of exchanging gifts on Christmas.
