We love this entertaining idea from Instuctables: take an IKEA ice cube sticks tray and use capped/sealed plastic straws, cut them perfectly to fit to size of the trays so the ends fit by friction, fill with water or whatever flavoured liquid of your choice, and voila, your own ice straw! Very cool...we're going to get a few of these ice trays and prepare a cord of these for our next summertime BBQ shindig. Check out the step by step directions here

cool i have to try this!
Is it just me, or is this the stupidest thing I've seen in a long while? I....just don't understand.
You don't understand the fun of having ice straws? Maybe a little silly, but we think hardly "stupid". Imagine flavouring these, so as they melt, they infuse your beverage with lemon, or a sugar infusion, or even liquor!
A bendy straw would work better... bend up the end so it doesn't get encased in ice. This will prevent your lip being frozen by the straw (think tongue-frozen-to-the-flag-pole like in A Christmas Story).
Silly, yes. Stupid comes off a little harse, I must confess. Don't they melt before you even get a chance to draw liquid through them? Sounds like I need to do some Google-ing.
I used to think straws were silly until I realzed
1) that they help you acutally enjoy the taste of your drink more than if you just fill your whole mouth with a gulp of numbing liquid.
2) if I don't have a straw, I am just wasting lots of flavor and liquid. I mean, when I drink out of a glass, how much liquid just ends up splashin' against the walls of my cheeks where there aren't any tastebuds? And the studies are out - the body can only use 300 ml of liquid every 15 minutes no matter how thirsty you are, so why not savor and regulate that small amount?
if there's not an ikea around, crate and barrel has a similar tray on sale for 2.95.
