Q: I want to get a platform bed, any kind that is not too expensive. Ikea Malm seems good for the price. I would like to know how to babyproof a platform bed that has sharp edges. I am in love with platform beds but I have a son who is going to turn 8 months soon. He is already so active I am afraid he'll hurt himself with the edges of a platform bed. I can't afford an upholstered bed because of the price. Please help!

Shaw's Original Fir...
I'm not familiar with the bed in question, but we have had no problems with our "un-childproofed" wooden platform bed, the corners of which hurt if you step into them by accident. It may depend a bit on your child and how much of a tumbler they are, though.
We have the Malm. It wasn't the prettiest, but we tucked folded hand towels into the bottom corners. We made the bed right away when we got up and made sure the comforter was out over the edges so everything was always padded. We kept it that way for about 3 months and now we have everything back to normal.
We have the Malm in our guest room, which our 2 and 4-year-old love. So far, we haven't had any problems, but the adults that have slept on it have run into the corners several times. :o) A thick comforter should do the trick and if you're really worried, you could use those foam corner things with some 3m removable adhesives (like they use for hooks), which will come off easily. Not the prettiest, but it's a temporary solution, for a temporary situation.
We use Prince Lionheart Table Edge Guard with 4 Corners, Chocolate Brown. It works great!!

my daughter has used the malm since her 2nd birthday with no problems and our big bed is not a malm, but a big pottery barn platform bed and we have never had a problem. the duvee usually goes down over the corners for a little padding.
I have a Malm bed since my daughter was born, and she never hurt herself in all her two years. Don't underestimate your kids brainpower.
if you want a platform with rounded edges, check out Dania. We got our affordable platform bed there.
Agree - We have the Malm in our bedroom since birth and have never had a problem with my now 3 yo son getting hurt. In fact, because it is so low to the ground, I actually think it's safer than most because he has fallen off of it a couple of times (jumping, rolling) and was not hurt at all
We have a Malm and I've gored my shin on the corner more than once -- but our 4 yr old twins never have hurt themselves on it. It's low to the ground so falling off is much less an issue, though carpets help with that.
I have the malm and my poor 18 month old son has fallen off the bed several times now while sleeping. On his way down he usually hits the wooden platform part then hits the floor... At least it's closer to the ground than most beds. It's never been worse than a bump though so we don't really baby proof it.
stick a couple of corner protectors on the end of the bed....your son will not bumping into corners in no time, so I wouldn't buy a bed just for a 'phase' of toddler clumsiness. I think the platform is nice b/c it is low and the baby wont hurt as bad if he falls off...
We've had our malm since long before our boys (4 & 2) and as stated above, I've bumped my shins a time or two but neither child has ever had any problems with it. In fact, I LOVE having this bed with young kids because it is so low to the ground, there is no worry about them hurting themselves falling a long distance. This bed, even with the sharp corners, seems WAY safer than a traditional adult bed which is much higher off the ground.
Ha! We have the Malm. We bought the Prince Lionheart corner guards someone mentioned up thread loooong before we had our baby (now 15 months). I bonked myself on the edges so many times I needed the corner guards to save my legs!
Interesting! We upgraded to a king size bed a year ago and have had it on the floor for safe cosleeping. I'd like to get a bed frame but I'm nervous about this issue and falls from a higher bed. I was thinking Malm at least until we don't have young kids because it's so low but my parents have one at their house and I also injured myself on it a couple times. Maybe worth rethinking?
Soften the edges by upholstering the frame. If you use a Crypton fabric, it will be durable and cleanable for youngsters.
Just posted on my blog today a photo of a platform bed that has been upholstered, softening any sharp corners. You can see the photo at the bottom of the post here: http://www.kidspacestuff.com/blog/2011/10/kids-tweens-teens-bedroom-safety/

We have a platform bed and a 2-year-old and it was never an issue. You could let the heavier layer of bedclothes (blanket or duvet or whatever) drape over the edges, but that tends to make people misjudge where the hard edge is. If you like the clean, tucked-in look, just do it. Our little one didn't bonk herself once.
Forget the baby - platform beds are not compatible with adults who are prone to whacking feet and legs on things. I live with one of those people, and pointy corners are a terrible idea for bedrooms in my personal opinion.
But! To get to your question, I would get a comforter one size bigger than the bed so there is significant flop-over. Corner guards for the early walking phase, but comforter overhang for the ensuing years.
Ikea beds are great, being low to the ground is really ideal for kiddos safety-wise. My four year old still occasionally falls off when she is goofing around on our bed.
There are Ikea corner guards too!
i've bruised my shins on the Malm more times than i can count, and yet my toddler has never had a problem with it. i would love to own DWR's Min bed, which has rounded aluminum corners--a klutz's dream come true!
