Q: My fiancee and I are moving into a charming foursquare home next month. Unfortunately the owner of this house renovated the kitchen and bathroom... and we're stuck with beige floor-to-ceiling tile! The kitchen isn't so bad (I can paint the cabinets) but the bathroom has me stumped. Any ideas for shower curtains, window curtains, and towels/bathmats? Should I just keep it white and simple, or is there a color that will somehow compliment this blah bathroom?

White Enamel Flatwa...
I'm in exactly the same situation. The condo I just bought is all beige tiles, carpet, walls, and builder oak cabinets. Everything is nearly new so I can't justify tearing it out, but it's a whole lot of beige to try to figure out how to live with. At least you've got a nice claw foot tub, mines the typical built in with a cheap beige (surprise!) surround and glass doors so no options for a curtain.
I think neutrals and whites could be very complimentary. You could get a very spa type feeling going because there is soooo much beige tile..I love claw tubs. You could put beautiful neutral curtains around the tub,add wood blinds and and use bamboo type floor mats.Modern clean accessories. If the vanity is dating, try switching out the doors and drawer fronts. That's fairly affordable and you could easily use a builders grade slab style front. That could pull together the bland, but modern, tile job and the tub together.Depending how you balance the textiles, you could get a modern style going. If you dress up the window with fabric consider using something clear around the tub area.Dress up the tub...do less with the window.Especially if you use any colour textiles.Beige tends to match any colour if you get the right tone.I would use one long runner instead of multiple mats.I put cheap rubber no slip shelf liner under mats in my bathrooms and use any mat I like.never had problems with 'rot' from water.I don't like most rubber back bath sets.
I like eclectic and traditional decor.I tend to go towards vintage/hotel in my bathroom decor tastes. To me the tub says luxury.I would dress up the tub area.Maybe gold or silver paint the claws.Add drama with the shower curtains and tie backs.Put stain glass film on the window. No curtain if possible.Assuming you have a typical vanity.Consider some retro ceramic hardware.I would treat the tile as wall colour that can't be changed and ignore it to pursue a look that takes away their bland coldness.I'm thinking Art Nouveau luxury. That's me and not you.
The only thing I would say to anyone with this much neutral tile in a bathroom is to remember that tile traditionally was considered a top of the line feature and.until recent decades, you didn't see this much in most homes. It's never the end of the world for any bathroom when it's in good condition.Builders grade is very cheap, but there are numerous upgrade items available that are just as affordable that can transform bathrooms like this.Pick the theme and feel you want and go all the way with it.bathrooms are small and it's the most affordable room in the house to decorate and showcase.
Another thing to consider if you want colour is to use it to ground the tile and the room.
Pick your floor mat first. That anchors the room and then pick the other colour elements....like your towels and curtains.I have wool eastern style rugs all over my house. They inspire my colour choices for the rooms they are in.The eastern carpets in my upstaris bath dictated the rest of the room.Always works for me.
My downstairs bath is a solid white tile with green glass tile and almost black green floor tile.I used a neutral low pile mat in that room and the towels are matching.Pulled it together nicely. I also like to invest in small features.A beautiful light or mirror.getting started is always the hardest thing for me,so this is the way I get inspired with my decor.Including the baths.
Black and White. A white shower curtain with a black design. A big long runner or rug in B&W. Paint the window frame gloss black. I can't see the sink, but if it's a cabinet you can paint, gloss black. Any picture frames in black with white mats. Any "furniture" in black.
White for containers, towels.
Well, beige goes with just about any color, so it's not so bad I think. If it were me, I would plan a color scheme of white, linen beige, and a bright (maybe turquoise). Choose a modern patterned shower curtain with these colors, and a coordinating cotton rug and towels. I would paint the trim around that window with a bright turquoise paint -- really make it POP. If you don't want turquoise, you could do palm green, or orange. But just make it one bright.
@parnassus "Well, beige goes with just about any color" - this is so not true! Beige sucks everything else into a room into a vortex of beige because it's so hard to find a colour to work that doesn't have a beigeness to it too - so you end up with terraccotta or burgundy red rather than tomato red, and before you know it you are living in a blancmange!
Having said that, my friend has a smilarly beigetastic bathroom and was surprised to discover that this bathmat from Ikea (http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/20163963/#/10209339) along with this plant pot (http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/20186653/) and plant (http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/70186735/) really lifted it. And all for under €20.
Stationeryfiend, beige is versatile, that is why it is so widely used. Of course you have to select just the right color so that it dominates the beige. I suggested a turquoise blue because it is the opposite of orange/red. And it's a trendy color right now so there are a lot of options out there.
I differ from the crowd, I think just a bunch of white would be boring. How about teal or eggplant purple. I would bring some white in to lighten the room, maybe some sheer white curtains or something with a mix of white and color. I like the dark purple in this pallette-http://design-seeds.com/index.php/home/entry/powdered-tones
I am perplexed by the notion some people have that builders beige can't handle colour. How does anyone go from beige to terracotta's only? It's part of the same family, but in no way is it limiting for colour choices.Think about the many different decor styles that are colourful and beige/brown terra based.
Spanish and North African design.Italian and French 'country' styles...even American adobe and Santa Fe.All are extremely colourful and beige toned right through to dark browns with vibrant colours of all kinds.I am not suggesting you theme the room,however...if you want colour in a beige tile box bathroom,...be inspired by design that is beige/browns based. Most interesting to me when considering these types of styles and colour is that they incorporate TILES! Some of the most beautiful available past and present. Many have very true colour.Reds,blues,yellows,purple....list is just endless.Too many to mention them all.
Using colour shouldn't be a problem in this room.I always prefer colour also.I wouldn't feel limited for colour by a beige tile. Then again...commentators on AT often say to match paint to neutral tile grouts. What? I disagree with that too.The room is new, clean and fresh....your starting with something nice to begin with. You just need some inspiration.I hope we get a chance to see what you do decide to do.I'm always curious to know how things turn out.
I am in the same situation with all new, beige, builder-installed tiles and cabinets.
In my Beige bathroom I painted the walls a deep blue (Farrow Ball Railings) so the beige is a calm contrast (I think). If you can't paint, maybe a deep, dark hue in mat, towels, Curtains would help?
I'm with thechelseagirl and heynowtex. Go with color. Deep color. I purchased a new home a few years ago with white walls, beige carpet and tile and oak cabinets. Everywhere. It seemed like there was no definition of the shape of the rooms. We went like browns and greens, but any rich, deep color can work well with beige.
What colors do you like? Use a rug, curtains and other fabrics to add color. Just make sure they're easy to wash.
i have browns and beige as well and have found that i really like greyish blue accents with it. good luck!
A few ideas. 1) Paint the tub! and maybe a paint the light fixture the same color. 2) Choose your favorite accent color... either bright or neutral. Have fun with little pops of that color here and there. The towels, mat, shower curtain, trash can, accessories could all potentially have some color. 3) if you want to go natural add some green plants. Maybe a wall planter over the toilet? with some neutral/green accents here and there.
