Q: My husband and I recently bought this bold rug for the living room in our new aparment, and we're in love with it. I would love new pillows to go with it, as opposed to the ones here that are from our former apartment as placeholders, but am not sure what to do. I have been thinking about light blue and white (in thick stripes or just solid?) or light gray and white. I don't want to detract from the rug, and feel like the current pillows "fight" too much. Thanks for any opinions!

I like Liz's ideas. I love your new rug. It already has a LOT going on. I don't think I would add a new pattern; not even stripes. Maybe polka dots, but that takes a special kind of person. I liked the waffle-fabric in cream in the background of Liz's Target example, too. If you can find that pillow in the color--gray or cream? that contrasts the red on the rug. I think red pillows with a design like Liz's would work, too, as long as they are the same tone as the rug. The idea of a pillow in any complementary color with an animal or an object would work. Just don't use a floral or animal pattern. Use a flower or an animal. Have fun!!
I'd suggest homing in on the grey/white and adding complimentary colors like yellow, black, turquoise mixed in. Maybe a couple of neutral solids with texture and a couple of patterned, such as in the link below.

My mind instantly went to these Swiss army blankets! I'm sure they have pillows you could search for too. http://www.etsy.com/listing/102357879
Yup - Strike the pillows.
Also, that settee/daybed thing looks orphaned over there. Scoot it in. I think the color works better with the rug. I would rearrange so that the sofa and that piece of furniture are part of the conversation area. Its okay for it to be in front of those cabinet things. You could even move one of those small cabinets so they are in a small 'L" in the corner.
The ottomans can either be against the windows and pulled out when needed, or placed on the other side of the coffee table so you have three seating pieces - either across from the sofa or across from the gray thing depending on the rest of the room.
I know you weren't looking for a room rearrange, but I think it will be better for the rug.
As far as color - I would concentrate on picking up the gray - and red is now the accent color. But the other way you could go is go for the sort of Marrakesh look with very, very luxe fabrics draping on the wall - but the sofa is not so theme-y.
If you buy stripes, limit yourself to one striped pillow balanced with other patterns & solids. A bunch of striped pillows will clash. I would stick with rounded patterns that work with the rug pattern (e.g. abstracts, florals, Moroccan prints, etc.).
Also, I'd also stay away from all light-colored pillows... if your pillows don't have a bit of bold color, that rug is going to conquer your living room. If it were me, I'd mix some bold, multi-colored, patterned (slightly more expensive) pillows with some lighter solid (less expensive) pillows.
I like Liz's suggestions. Also possibly these:
1. Antropologie's Orimono Flower pillow
2. Antropologie's Jacobean pillow
3. Antropologie's Capricious Canopy pillow (I want this one!)
4. Assorted Rani Arabella pillows
http://www.surya.com/
I'd go with a mixture of kilim pillows - one striped, the others small and large motifs - with red as an accent rather than dominant color.
Oh man -- would anyone be able to ID that rug itself? I purchased something similar online but was bummed to see in person that it was more of a deeper red and bone color and not red and white. Love the one featured here.
For pillows I would go with solids -- blues, green blue and whites. I love teals with reds.
@nouvelleyorker - Kiim pillows are a brilliant suggestion. In both color and texture, they can stand up to the weight of a dark leather sofa, dark wood floors and furniture, and that handsomely bold rug. They have weight that other pillows lack, which I think would benefit this room. Etsy has lots of affordable options in all sorts of color and pattern combos.
I love the look of dark teal with that color red. They're complementary without being too Christmas-looking. And then I might add in something with texture, rather than pattern, to go with the teal, like one of these:

Most of the time your pillows are going to be set against the dark leather couch — not the rug itself. So I don't shy away from picking patterned pillows. Just keep the scale of the pattern smaller than your rug, and vary the scale a bit if you get multiple pillows.
As long as the pillows don't clash with the color or style of your rug (e.g., I'd skip Barbie pink or metallic silver) you should be fine.
I like the idea of the Kilim pillows or other ethnic patterns, since the pattern of your rug is a modern twist on a Moorish or Persian rug.
When in doubt, buy a bunch of pillows, try them out in the room, and return the ones you don't like!
I think I might opt for a pillow arrangement for the dark sofa that was mostly light, natural linen with some color in it.
For the lounge, I might go with something darker, maybe predominately the same red as the sofa, to continue to pull the eye from the rug to the lounge.
Here are some ideas for pillows for the dark sofa:

Not that you asked, but Emily Henderson did a great tutorial on mixing patterns that might help you figure out how to work with what you have and work with all the suggestions you've gotton:

Opposites. Also the answer is right in your photo. See that cobalt blue vase? Cobalt blues and purples.
Thank you all so much -- these are such great ideas! The pattern mix tutorial is great, @cvjn. I think I've found a winning pillow -- and it corresponds with a lot of the suggestions that were given here! Bolder, with a touch of an ethnic/Moroccan feel (similar to kilim and those at surya.com) in colors that pick up and complement the red rug: http://www.laylagrayce.com/Products/Jennifer-Paganelli-Back-Bay-Orange-Blue-Hook-Pillow__PH30JP06C18SQ.aspx Still can accent these with lighter solid pillows, too. Thoughts?
By the way, @MY09, we got the rug via Zinc Door, link here: http://www.zincdoor.com/p/Frontier-Moroccan-Crimson-Hand-Woven-Wool-Rug__SUFT114.aspx
Hello!
I love you choice for the layla grayce pillow. (and gosh I love the anthropologie's cushions suggested by Slangevar).
But I very much agree with thesnackhounddotcom! The day bed would look so nice on the rug!!
On the cream day bed you could used simple linnen charcoal cushions.
On the leather sofa a mix of the lalyla grayce and the mongolian lamb wool cushion from west elm suggested by Iruth (I think that on leather you need to use something more textured than linnen... mongolian lamb wool and kilims were very good suggestion).
@KM2 - That pillow is perfect! Exactly what everyone was dancing around. Your room is going to be outstanding.
@cvjn - Ditto on the thanks for the pattern mixing tutorial. My instincts appear to be good, but it's so nice to have an actual system.
oh what this pattern? http://www.etsy.com/listing/99781168/moroccan-tile-slim-pillow-in-red-with
Love that pillow KM2!!! I hope the question asker goes with your suggestion!
