Q: I have a design dilemma that I'm hoping someone can help with! My kid's room has no hardwired lighting so I am looking for a cute plug-in ceiling fixture that I can hang in their room. I'm kinda liking the Ikea Knappa because it is plastic versus the paper of a paper lantern, which I just kinda feel is a little scary, but the Knappa is still not quite perfect. Any thoughts on anything similar?

Editor: It's out of date but Apartment Therapy did a small roundup of pendant lamps that aren't hard wired a few years ago. What might be valuable though is reading through the reader comments on the post - many people suggest simply buying a cheap cord kit and choosing any shade you like. Readers, what advice do you have for Nadia? Do you have ideas for a great pendant lamp she can plug in?

We installed the Knappa in my daughter's room and I love it. Because her ceiling is not super tall, we mounted the lamp flush against the ceiling, rather than letting it hang like a pendant.
I may be wrong, but I would think that just about any light fixture could be made into a plug fixture. That might open up your possibilities a bit more. Again, I might be wrong.
I fully support the buy a shade you like suggestions. I spent hours and hours on the internet looking for something for my daughters nursery before finally ordering something that I liked only to discover that it wasn't plug in after all. Luckily I was able to salvage the situation by rewiring it with an ikea hanging light kit.
Fwiw this is what I got and it was relatively easy to rewire. http://www.missing-pixel.com/Tazana_Stemcell_Egg.htm
We have the same problem in my son's nursery. I am currently working on a drum shade to hang. Bought a plug in lamp kit on Amazon, got a used drum shade, and am adding paper maps to the entire outside of the shade. You could always pick up a lamp shade and add fabric that goes with the room.
CB2 sells one or $49 that looks far richer. Basic drum shape, nice chrome hardware, hooks and all.
You can convert just about any fixture into a plug-in. A local lighting store will do it for you for pretty inexpensively.
We found a great website to design a custom lampshade for a hanging plug in lamp- it was fun to do, the customer service was great, and it's a really well made shade that we totally love.

We have the exact same problem in our son's room. We're planning on hard wiring a switch eventually but in the meantime, to keep our son from attempting to plug in or unplug the light (if you have it in an exposed spot) we've been using a hinged locking cover like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Outlet-Plug-Cover-by-Kidco/dp/B001SKKW0E%3FSubscriptionId%3D15HRV3AZSMPK0GXTY102%26tag%3Damznf-us-tbsearchsea-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB001SKKW0E
