Q: At a garage sale I happened upon yesterday, I came across this fantastic rug! I was hoping to learn a little more about it, the company it was made by, or any other information I can learn about it. The woman I bought it from says it is from the 30's or 40's, but I can't really narrow it down from there.
If you could help me out that would be fantastic! (PS: I apologize for the abysmal state of our rental carpeting. It's embarrassing!)

What a great find!
Wow... gorgeous. Can't offer any info though. It's beautiful, congratulations on your find.
Wow, that rug is gorgeous! Looks like the background might be wool, and the tag looks like it reads "Made in India".
It's beautiful! Crewel is a traditional kashmiri craft, so most crewel comes from there, but on the other hand it's been around for ages (really, it was widespread by the 16th century) so really it could be from anywhere. I'd bet on India, although the design looks vaguely Mexican to me too.
Can't offer anything other than, good find! I'm more than a little jealous :-)
I have a rug similar to your rug. Its not as ornate as yours, but the way its made is the same with the felted wool and the embroidery. When I did some research on mine (scored for $5 at a flea market!) I found out that it was from Kashmir. Great score!
Another vote that it's a wool rug from Kashmir. They still make rugs very similar to this in wool or silk. Neighboring regions of India also make similar rugs and wall hangings, but not to the same quality and usually with bolder colors and I haven't seen non-Kashmiri pieces for sale in the US outside of Indian shops.
Beautiful find. For price comparison, 2 x 3 foot silk rugs cost $30 in India 10 years ago.
Congrats on a beautiful find!
What a great find! Sorry I don't have any information for you though.
Can't help, but it's gorgeous!
I have a similar rug - although yours is much nicer! - and the tag (which looks exactly the one in your picture) reads "Made in British India".
It is called a namdha, felted wool with chain stitch embroidery. http://www.etsy.com/listing/70631157/reduced-small-wool-kashmiri-embroidered
Kashmiri embroidery is figurative.
These were popular in the 60s. They were never expensive - this is a better one,, because of the amount and quality of embroidery. Hard to tell its age.
This is a kashmiri rug from India. It is called namda- felted wool adorned with aari embroidery. It is beautiful and easily available in India. To top it, it is not very expensive either (at least in India it isn't). Perhaps you can buy it online from fabindia.
I got some fantastic pillows and a rug in Greece 3 years ago in the exact same style and very similar designs. I got them in a little mountain town called Arachova, just outside of Delphi and about 2 hours from Athens. Most of the traditional Greek cruel art that I saw resembles your find.
We had these numdha rugs in our home when I was a child in the 60's. When my mother vacuumed, she'd pile them on her bed where I'd tunnel into them and make a yurt-like tent for myself. My mother's rugs were quite large; I have two smaller ones I bought from a fair-trade store several years ago.
Make that "numdah."
