If you're one of the people that purchased an iPad this weekend, congratulations. Hopefully you weren't one of the foolish looking folks that we saw on our local news &mdash you weren't portrayed in the best of ways! However, we're sure there are a thousand and one things you're dying to do with your iPad &mdash have you considered using it as a second monitor yet?
Yes, we purchased an iPad for the sole purpose of using it as a second monitor for our home computer &mdash PSYCH! Seriously though, if you do have or intend to purchase an iPad, you can turn your home office set up into sweet dual monitors.
iDisplay is a downloadable app for the iPad that turns it into a second monitor. It works just as if you'd gone out and purchased a second monitor (most likely for a lot less than the price of an iPad, but oh well). Anyway, ShapeServices recommends using the iPad as a second screen for smaller applications such as your Twitter or iChat lists as well as your email. It kind of makes sense when they put it that way &mdash we do get frustrated now and then when we're trying to reference something in our internet browser while we're typing a post for Unplggd email.
The iPad-turned-display will be connected and function as a second monitor via Wifi. The iDisplay app is available for download at their introductory price of $4.99, which we seems pretty fair. If we're willing to pay $4.99 to play Monopoly on our iPhone, what's the big deal in paying that for a second monitor?

pretty cool!
The big deal is that this product doesn't work for crap. Why are you suggesting people buy it when you've clearly not actually tried it yourself??
I think that this was a joke, beaub. Somehow, humor gets lost on this site far too often.
Kinda Cool, but I think a user could save $400 by buying a 15" monitor from NewEgg.
@derek A user could most definitely save $400 by buying a second monitor from NewEgg.
@beaub My humor definitely didn't translate well in this post - I was not recommending to purchase this app.
yeah, i didn't read the humor in it at all, really sounded like you want people to buy the app...
if i was stupid enough to buy an ipad, it's not a bad idea to use it to extend your monitor while at home, then take it with when you go out. However i have better things to spend my money on then a large glorified ipod.
@jmorey - you might have better things to spend money on, but do you have better things to spend your time on than bashing a product you haven't used?
i used one earlier today - my teacher brought his to class. the thing is very fast, and a ton of fun to browse the web, read books, magazines and comics, play games and watch videos. it's not for me, but i can see a ton of people picking the thing up and loving the simplicity of it.
i own a 1st Gen iPhone. the iPad IS NOT a glorified iPod.

I had my iPad delivered this weekend. While it does do many of the things the ipod touch does, the user experience is Soooo much better. The USA Today app almost looks like an actual newspaper, yet the news, sports, and weather are so much fresher. The GQ app is almost like the actual magazine, except that I can link directly from the ads to a product's website. I can catch up on ABC programs while cooking chicken on the Foreman in my kitchen - on screen that doesn't make me squint, no less. There are lots of positives and I'm not seeing many negatives so far (other than there are not enough iPad ready apps just yet).
