Mara's condo has a necessary but unsightly feature smack dab in the middle of the living room: a wall-mounted air conditioner. She desperately wanted to disguise the yellowed AC unit so it was still accessible and functional, but infinitely better looking. After giving her IKEA BILLY bookcase a discriminating look, she reckoned it was tall and wide enough to fit nicely around the eyesore. Let the hack commence!

Mara's brother pitched in by assembling the bookcase and cutting out the back of cabinet where the AC unit would fit. Mara herself cut and painted a piece of wood to fit the upper portion of the cabinet. Four door hinges and two knobs later, she had a cabinet instead of a shelf.

Now, she can open it up during the warm summer months when it's needed. Or she can keep that puppy closed in the winter. Either way it solved her problem and made for some cute bonus storage to boot!

I think we can agree that it makes a huge difference in the space. See more over at Design Evolving.

Many thanks to Mara for sharing her project with us.
