The monitor stand is probably the easiest thing to hack. I mean, it's just a box your computer monitor sits on to raise it to the ideal eye level for efficiency and comfort, right? But the trick (especially for us decor-minded folk at Unplggd) is to hack a monitor stand that looks good. We think we've found a winner.
Taking the brilliant lead from life-hacking blogger Richard Yong, you can craft a customized monitor stand for less than $10!
Considering commercial monitor stands can cost you up to $50, this IKEA-hacked version is a steal. Plus, it's a bit softer (with the wood grain and all) and endlessly customizable with wood stain or paint.
What is it? The BOALT DVD rack from IKEA ($9.99, IKEA.com). What is designed to store 29 DVD cases can be flipped on it's side (er—front, really) and raise your computer monitor up just a bit to the perfect height.
If you're not into the unfinished wood, polish it off with some stain or paint to match your desk top for a visually seamless look.
