If you were a designer for IKEA and had designed some of the more iconic pieces for the chain (the Mandal bedroom collection, the Rexbo shelf unit, the PS Bintje, the PS Nybygge, the Vika Fagelid to name a few), what do you think your house would look like? Something like this one, we'd imagine.
Francis Cayouette, the Canadian-born designer who's created some of our favorite pieces for the Swedish chain, lives in this home that combines some of his work with choice modern pieces (the Bertoia chair with the IKEA sheepskin is a perfect example of our favorite mix of high and low) for a spare and elegant home.

Ahh that white-washed wood is gorgeous!
Light and bright - shows such restraint. Not sure I could keep myself from adding a few bursts of color! (Uh, I KNOW I would have to sneak a few little things in there!) Checked out the link to his work -- I knew about the IKEA things (which I love) but also liked the environmental idea that won an award.
If you look at the guy's profiles, he's got all sorts of nice things that didn't get to the US, thanx to the lawyer-happy people here. :( I'd love those LEGO-killers or the shower caddy... damn.
I feel like it should be more designed.. maybe that's just me. It does just feel like a catalogue, but without the za za zoo!
That bench in the kitchen is fantastic!
Yawn...
I try never to bring work home, but that's just me :)
LOL, ninakk!
I like it, very pretty. Does it match my taste in my own place, nope. :)
I absolutely LOVE the pendant light in the bedroom. Does anyone know the source?
Loving the floors as well. Jealous...
Elegant? OMG, this place looks so cold, so sterile and so sad.
I am simply in love with the kitchen and its furniture,
there is no other way of putting it, it is love.
Seriously? This looks like the first apartment of a young person who can't afford to furnish/decorate it.
Waaaaaaaaaaay too sterile for me. Especially in cold weather. Just looking at it gives me chills. brrr
But hey, he'd probably go nuts here in my home with the books everywhere!
I like this aesthetic. Much more so than filling a place up with a bunch of unnecessary things.
if it was mine it would have more books, but otherwise i like it. very scandinavian in aesthetic.
What?! No Expedit? No Poang?
I really like the living room (especially since I have the same fabric working as a canvas above my couch) but the other rooms look so incomplete!
Love love love it.
It's totally my style. I think it's so gorgeous. I like things clean, elegant, and modern, and Id LOVE my place to look like that! I can understand some people would like more colors (like, too many colors...), but to me this is enough colors. I work as a graphic designer, and I see enough colors during the day. When I'm home, I want to feel peaceful.
I love this. I love white, grey, black, silver in a home, and clearly the house would have been de-cluttered somewhat for the photos. I love the pops of green in the living area, and the warmth of the wooden bench in the kitchen. I really think the bedroom does a great job of highlighting the view out the windows - all that greenery to make the most of!
I think it looks like a really warm place... but that's just me!
I think people forget design is subjective. I am not a fan of cluttered spaces, and loud, bright colours and patterns en masse. Obviously some of the posters on this article are, but there's a big difference between sharing opinions/views and constructive comments and sharing rude/narky comments.
That IKEA heart cushion with arms would pep it up a bit. It looks like a nice but a bit too impersonal.
oops nice place.
Some people like the minimalist look! I'm one of them, for sure.
I'm also lusting after that bench in his kitchen.
Elegant and peaceful.
I love the floor covering (not really a rug?) in the kitchen. Does anybody know where I can find that?
I'm just glad she has all those nice wide under counter drawers, to store her soul.
Bench in the kitchen, why are you not mine?
(Where is it from? Please do tell.)
I think it's great and really envy all the white. I couldn't live that way, I need a bit more warmth (and color) but this definitely appeals. Nice to see a place that is simple and clean, not every space filled with something.
I love how some feel because it's too monochromatic or minimal-like that it's heartless, stale and lacks a soul.
I personally love minimalism, and I also have a ton of art and architecture books. They're in my bedroom and hallway closets. Did you ever think that she may just choose not to display them? Thinking the way some do lacks passion and soul and belies an obvious ignorance of what calm, monochromatic or style means.
To each his/her own. But to bash it because it doesn't have crap laying out, or crocheted crafts is -- man, they need Apartment Therapy.
The monochrome Persian rug is killer. I only wish my bedroom could look so minimal
That first picture is straight out of Pleasantville.
simple and clean... I love it!
Typical Scandinavian. All the magazines are full of this white, white washed floor, white kitchens. I guess this designer did not want to get stimulated or inspired at home. 13 in a dozen.
The pictures are taken from a photoshoot in the Danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende. The article is here: http://www.fri.dk/bolig/flot-finish-i-ikea-designerens-hus
To see the gallery click "billedserie" in the grey box on the right.
I think those people who don't "get" classic Scandinavian interiors such as this would appreciate them more were they to see them in person... There is an aspect to these sorts of interiors that just doesn't come across in pictures... there is much more texture, life, power, and energy to them then the photographs are able to capture.
I suppose if anything breaks he doesn't have to take a number at the customer service counter.
halltd, I think the lamp in the bedroom is by Normann Copenhagen- Norm 06.
nielanderson, thanks for the link.
The apartment has some color, check it out people:)
Love the place!
I agree that it looks like the under-designed lame first-time starter home of someone fresh out of dorm-life with little to no budget. I dont like it.
It's not my taste, but who knows what it really looks like when it's not cleaned up for a shoot. I do hope I never see another sheepskin on a wire chair, though.
I think the kitchen bench is probably an antique, but perhaps we'll see a version in a future catalogue. The more traditional styles aren't available in the US, which is a pity.
And I don't think that the threat of law suits kept some of the stuff from being marketed in the US--USA stores have tons of stuff that's not available in Russia, etc.
I want to see the unstaged pictures!
Hello Bench In the Kitchen,
I had missed you and thought of you when I was away. I am back again, looking at you.
