Our love for the IKEA Expedit (our workhouse in kids' rooms) knows no bounds. Each square opening presents a display and storage opportunity, and is what makes it so appealing. But what if were rejiggered?
We spotted this Expedit on IKEA Hackers. It had been hacked by its owner so that the uniform square openings are now thin and fat rectangles, perfect for display of items that may not have fit previously. With this simple change, a hacked Expedit can also be turned 90 degrees so that the shelves run horizontally. And don't overlook the fact that this unit has been mounted to the wall. If you're interested in all the details of how to pull off this hack, check out IKEA Hackers.

Nomade Express Slee...
FANCY!
Whoa. I love that you can pile shoes under it. Let's be real people, we all have shoe piles by the door.
Woah, these buggers are really really heavy, that's crazy that you were able to mount it on the wall!
Hmm, my walls are fairly solid. I think I'd have to use a billion brackets underneath and a fair few fixings at the top and sides for peace of mind.
The upper wall cabinets in my garage (over the washer and dryer) recently fell on me. They just held extra laundry detergent and cleaners. This just seems like a questionable decision to me right now.
Thinking it may be more secure with nice legs? even just four legs would make me feel better about doing this.
My house is teeny and since I took everything off the floor/started buying furniture with legs it looks much bigger.
It's creative! Still, though, I think it looks a bit odd. The empty space under it is bizarre. Maybe if there was a bench or something there?
Expedits are so heavy I concur with those who commented that they wouldn't want this on the wall. Even bolted into the studs it seems less than ideal. The idea of shifting the opening around is neat though.
Ok, now, see, that LOOKS really good. But I notice that there's not much in it. I'd worry its so heavy it can't support even one more thing.
I am impressed. But it is Ikea. I am curious how it will stand up in a few months. I wonder how it will do when there are actual item on it.
@Funstraw I have a few different Expedit pieces that have lasted me ~4 or 5 years of pretty heavy use. They're much better than some of the other Ikea shelves, that's for sure.
holy crap!
That looks super cool but it makes me really nervous.
I need a "workhouse" in my room too! :D
I think it's funny that so many people are worried about this on a wall. My kitchen cabinets with all of the dishes/glasses weigh more than an Expedit. I mean, I wouldn't tack up a few nails and call it a day, but with the right reinforcements it should be fine.
At ikea south philly today, I saw that the black-brown expedit TV storage unit was $99, last chance. Kind of wondering what's up with that... o.O
Sometimes I see the smaller 2x2 expedits mounted (in the ikea) this way, so... no, this is still scary. XD
After carrying two of these up a flight of stairs (with help), I cannot imagine putting them on the wall. We bought extra anti-topple anchors for ours (2 each) since we live near an active fault line.
IKEA's web site lists the Expedit at 208 lbs. for this configuration.
ThreeAcres, that's exactly what I thought. You wouldn't just want to put a little bracket on there and be done with it, but huge expanses of heavy wood cupboards are mounted to walls in houses, full of heavy breakable dishware, and nobody questions that. If you do the job properly then you're fine.
That said, the space under this is really big and therefore it looks kind of weird. Good inspiration, though. :)
I love this idea!
If you like Expedits you might like my "hack" (it might be old news, though, because it was on Ikea Hackers). I used DIY abstract paintings, mounted with hinges, in lieu of swinging doors. It helped hide my clutter and offered a new space to display art. Take a look here:

The greatest Ikea item ever is the Enetri bookshelf!
I agree with threeacres -- Think about your kitchen cabinets. They are MUCH heavier than an Expedit bookcase once you have all those dishes and whatnots in them. I love that it is mounted on the wall with room underneath for shoes or floor pillows.
@crossberg
I'm sure they are fine on the floor with the support sleeves going vertical, but horizontal with no support strength, I'd be careful. And definitely don't store vinyl. http://img521.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1188595499atp7.jpg
Unless your child is Oliver Twist, I think you mean 'workhorse,' not 'workhouse.'
@threeacres
But each individual cabinet is individually supported, isn't it? But if they aren't going to put tonnes of stuff into the expedit, I guess there's less to worry about....
@JasmineIsDomestic
YOU ARE WRONG it is the norrebo <she says, staring at one>
IKEA: Bookshelf Wars coming to a theatre near you!
Odd to me. Its so bulky and heavy looking it seems off to my eyes that its just floating there.
Juliagoolia thank you so much for saying exactly my first thought in a much funnier waythan I was coming up with!
We have a house w/ no entry hall- open the door and boom! Hello living room. We LOVE our expedit case and use the baskets for all of our shoes, plus one for winter stuff, and one for clutter (gasp! Horror!) Where there used to be a hateful pile of shoes and boots all over the floor, there is now a modern, organized entryway.
@FUNSTRAW
How'd that happen? Was it during an earthquake or a run-in or something? Or was it just under its own weight? I have a friend that uses hers for her beloved vinyl collection, but she has no kids and doesn't live near a fault line.
That has been online for a while. Just google ikea expedite fail. There are a few more. Vinyl records are very heavy.
The Expedit instructions clearly state that these should not be mounted on a wall. The Ikea kitchen cabinets are far more solid, and designed to be wall mounted. When assembled correctly and used as instructed, most Ikea furniture can last quite some time (though there have been "duds" over the years).
As for the vinyl-holding Expedits that failed, look closely at those pics and compare with the pics on Ikea, and you'll see the failed ones were oriented with the side-panel down (as opposed to the bottom-panel down).
Ah yes, JOH, I see what you mean, that's definitely user fail.
Why mount it on the wall? Seems unnecessary and probably unsafe,
Also, having professionally mounted kitchen cabinets on the wall is FAR different than mounting a bookcase to the studs in your drywall. And sometimes, even cabinets fall. I had a laundry room cabinet come right off the wall at me.
It's called glue. Use it to strengthen any flat-pack furniture. Glue every edge that contacts another shelf or edge. To hang it distribute the weight with a french cleat, "z" clip or thin flush mount or thin adjustable flush mount from Rockler. (http://www.rockler.com/c/brackets-braces.cfm)
As for the vinyl, each record weighs about .48 pounds (220 grams-ish). Put 15 records in a cubicle that is 9.66 pounds per cubicle. The IKEA website clearly states to only put a max of 29 lbs per shelf on the larger Expedit than than the one posted in the fail pic on Image Shack. Shelf = how many cubes across not one cube.
I think a french cleat at the bottom and the top could carry the weight fine if they are in wall studs or heavy duty anchors are used. And don't forget to glue the piece together. Glue it whether you are going to hang it or not. All of our IKEA purchases are solid as rocks and we have had some of them for 10 years.
this just looks weird... not diggin' it
Not bad, but one of the things I LIKE about the Expedit is the uniform square openings...
If you read the original posting they do take precautions in mounting on a wall. One picture has the girl standing on the shelf.

No, I think it must be 29lb per cube. For one, this is the load weight limit they give for all the expedit units, not just the largest; for another, the package measurement of the 2-drawer insert is 16lb. Of course that is not all the insert, but let's just pretend each insert is at least 8lb. Are you saying you can't put an insert in each compartment (5x8=40lb on a 5x5)? Granted, the insert fitting precisely into the cube would help support it, but according to your interpretation it's still AMA. ;)
