One of the most enjoyable aspects of IKEA furniture is the way it inspires DIYers to modify and create their own custom pieces. This homemade makeover of the old Granas coffee and side tables (which don't seem to be available anymore at IKEA) highlights just how easy it can be to transform a common piece into a personalized one without a great deal of effort.

Replacing the glass tops of the original Granas tables with wooden planks gives these metal tables an instant rustic look. The boards were all sanded smooth to round the edges before being stained with Minwax gel stain in Chestnut. The boards are connected underneath by a 1.2 cut to fit inside the frame of the original glass top. The final touch was hammering in the black upholstery tacks above to add a little detail.

Sprout Side Table
Great hack. The upholstery tacks add a nice touch, too. I wonder how this would look on the Granas kitchen table...
Definitely prefer the wood to the glass. Glass table tops scare me, especially if there's kids around.
nice! though i half wish you hadn't sanded it so well, i can imagine it could just as easily have looked more industrial that way
My immediate thought was that the amount of sanding you did is what made it look GREAT! (just to offer an opposing viewpoint). Also yes, the tacks are a fantastic look.
There are benefits to glass-topped tables (they look less bulky) but in this case I agree, the AFTER wins! Wonderful hack!
awesome change!
At first glance I thought the before was a patio table!! After is really great. :)
Love it!
Well done!
Awesome. Love wood and metal.
I have an old glass Ikea coffee table as well, problem is the metal frame itself is super wobbly :(
Some great inspiration!
Very nice! You took a crappy table and made it lovely.
:)
What a great idea, it's really unique.
Upholstery tacks are ingenious. Great look. And personally love the sanded look.
Love love love it! I may have to try this! Maybe for a patio table? I'm thinking that if I sealed it well, it would stand up to the elements?
LOVE this, bravo!
I would have totally overlooked that table before - but now that I've seen this I'm inclined to get one just to do this!
nice.
love this! i've been wanting to do something similar with the round vittsjo table.
When I saw this I thought, surely you cannot make that table look good. But you can! Great job!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this!
How do people even think of doing these things? It looks fabulous.
this looks great!
Great job!
I'm usually not a fan of the industrial style, but this is definitely an improvement! Congrats on a good idea!
