We've seen all kinds of IKEA hacks and have been impressed by all. Our favorite ones are those that don't require us to make an IKEA run for supplies but rather uses up something we already have (and maybe wished we didn't). We're liking this terrific makeover of a standard IKEA Lack side table over at DaddyTypes.
It looks like it was simple enough to accomplish - chalkboard paint on the surface and a cutout in the middle for a bowl to hold the chalk (a la Oeuf). But Greg of DaddyTypes warns of his failed attempt at doing something similar. The hard part seems to be getting the chalkboard paint to adhere to the surface and Greg suggests either a good primer or sanding.
Anyone pulled this off successfully?

White Enamel Four-P...
I painted the same table with chalk paint years ago and I've never had a problem. The paint adhered perfectly and has never scratched or peeled up. The Lack tables typically have a rough surface that helps the paint adhere.
I did something similar to this for my little boy's room, but I used a chalkboard decal instead.
Cons: Decal was substantially more expensive than the table itself (but it was a left over anyway so thats fine), and its not a great chalkboard surface. its okay, not great.
Pros: No primer, no painting, no fumes, no mess.
I made a table like this (without the chalk holder center) by covering a table top with chalkboard oilcloth. It makes the table very multipurpose!
I also did a similar project. I painted a LACK coffee table with chalkboard paint, then added velcro squares to the corners, and made a felt play mat that's removable so it can be either a train table or a chalkboard table. My 2-year old son loves it! I made it for Christmas, and so far the chalkboard paint is still adhering well to the table.

chalkboard vinyl would be a fabulous option as well, I've used it in my kitchen and it sticks to anything, and doesnt peel off TOO easily, so ideal for kids.
