Are your kids drawn to the train table at the bookstore like moths to a flame? It's easy to see why. The low table is a perfect height and the large surface can hold a ton of toys. Before buying a new train table, look around your house to see if you've got the makings of one laying around.
We found this great idea over at Ikea Hacker. It's the ubiquitous IKEA Lack shelf with an interior door affixed to the top. This easily gives a piece of storage furniture an additional use. Attach casters and you can easily move this train table to the center of the room or back against the wall. For more photos, check out IKEA Hacker.

this is absolutely brilliant. Wish I had the space to have this. My son would love this and I would love the book storage underneath...
We used an INGO dining table, with the legs cut off, to make a train table for our son. It' slightly smaller, but still wide enough to make a cool track. We also sawed the legs of 2 others to make coffee tables. They're cheap, sturdy, and easy to put together...
We're using the Ikea Lack coffee table (the larger one) for our train table. I found some canvas bins from Target that fit perfectly on the shelf underneath - 6 of them - and they store ALL the train stuff out of sight when we need to use the table for other things. No hack necessary. When we have a bigger place, I plan on getting a second one so the kids ca have a GIANT train table.
What an awesome idea. Perhaps once the child outgrows it, you could put the tall Ikea steel legs onto it and make it into an adult's craft/sewing table? It would be a great size for wrapping gifts, cutting fabric, etc.
what a cool idea for a slot car table also, AT is my muse.
awesome.
