Dude, it's, like, so meta! Reader Kim was browsing Ikea's kitchen display section in Richmond (AU) when she spotted this mini kitchen they made nestled into a larger kitchen. "They've hacked themselves." she declared!
Perhaps all your own hacked Ikea kitchens has inspired a Richmond staffer to demonstrate how easy and affordable it is to make a play kitchen from their components. And it's certainly cheaper than their own Duktig kitchen (which Kim's son had fun playing with in the store nonetheless). We checked out our Brooklyn Ikea this weekend, but could find no such display of good hack humor - has anyone else seen this in their local Ikea?
Thanks for the fun find Kim! Kim has lots of fun things to read about on her blog Stella Cake (endearingly named after what her daughter Stella Cate used to think her name was) so visit and say hello. Don't forget to check out her daughter's terrific play kitchen, too.
(Edited to correct the location of Richmond, Australia (sorry to disappoint residents of Richmond, VA!))

WAIT- There's IKEA in Richmond?

That's really strange. When my mom went to Ikea and mentioned ikeahacker to some of the employees they all acted like they had never heard of it. Apparently they weren't allowed to talk about it. I mean, what are the odds that not a single Ikea employee had heard of the site?
Thanks gretchenalexis for checking - that was my first thought too!
AU.... Australia.... Far from the states.
IKEA corporate doesn't tell the stores how to do their roomsets, so it's all up to the in-house designers to come up with something inspiring.
I know for sure that IKEA Woodbridge commonly uses their products in new and interesting ways and the designers there probably don't need to take ideas from places like IKEA Hacker.
Also, 90% of things posted on IKEA Hacker aren't safe and shouldn't be attempted with the furniture pieces that they're using. Please be aware of what parts of IKEA furniture use the board-on-frame type of construction and plan accordingly.
Richmond, Australia is my local Ikea. Thats where I saw another toy kitchen hack that I recreated at home.
It was an ODDVAR stool, with ATTEST handles and PANNA coasters as the stovetop burners.
The DUKTIG mini kitchen utensils hang via an S hook on the Door Handles, which were installed on the side of the stool as a rack.
I painted it pink and made little mini size teatowel to hang with it.
Sorry I don't have a pic, it has been passed on to a friend, whose littleun is enjoying it now.

@ adventrising:
I work for Ikea; have for four years. Odds that the people working on the sales floor have never even heard of Ikeahacker? Extremely high. Odds the people in the back office (designers and managers) have been to the site? Also high. Remember when you're on the sales floor you're talking to people who make $8-10 an hour...most of them just don't care beyond getting you whatever it is you want so you go away before you yell at them. Sad, but true!
I had to do a doubletake myself when I saw Richmond come up because I knew there was no way that there was a Richmond, VA IKEA store and I hadn't heard about it. Then I saw the (AU) and I relaxed a bit :)
WAIT! theres something OUTSIDE of Brooklyn?!?!?!?
hahaha!
WAIT! there are PEOPLE outside of Brooklyn?!??!
There's also an Ikea in Richmond, BC, Canada. You know, one of the host cities of the 2010 Olympic games? Americans are so provincial.
How crazy that Americans would think about an American city when the name of an American city is being used! How provincial!
