While we recognize the brilliance of Jasper Morrison's Crate Series, we also recognize that the price tags are ridiculous. That's why we were super-excited to see IKEA's addition of a plain pine box to their IVAR series of simple storage...

Perhaps the images of Jasper Morrison's Crate for Established & Sons will help inspire you?
IKEA's solid wood IVAR box is untreated wood. It is ready to be painted, waxed or stained (or left alone). It can be cut, screwed into, or added onto (maybe casters?).
Solid pine sides with pine plywood bottom, the box measures 30.75 " wide, 19.25" deep and 11.75" tall. An IVAR pine box will set you back just $35.

eee! perfect timing for those of us having a hard time finding wine crates to DIY some doggie goods...these are bigger than the usual wine crate, too, so accessories or beds for larger dogs are more viable. lovely!
I think the would also work nice as a shelf on the wall, for instance in the kitchen or hang it on the side of the bed to make it more stable and it uses less space.
I think even the Ivar pine box is expensive, for true DIY, Buy a 10" x 48" plank of pine wood ($7.99 at home depot) and cut 12" pieces. Use wood glue and nails to hold the pieces together while forming a box. For less than $10.00 you can have a 12"Wx12Hx10"D box. To cover the back, you would have to buy a smaller piece of pine wood or leave as is. It'll be just as beautiful.
Am I the only one who thinks this is a "slow news day" post? LOL.
ugh. very 1980s dorm room.
Hey, put some cushiony stuff in the bottom and you have a comfy kitty bed!
you can also pick up pine boxes at your local craft store for @ $10. I have several that I have re-purposed through my apt from time to time.
The Jasper Morrison box is specially treated to look like pine in quotation marks, to be a pine box as well as the idea of a pine box. It is conceptually removed from reality and use, in theory. The ikea box is just a box, and frankly, is not as good looking.

I'm about to order some crates to fashion legs for my new desk (a la the recent TONY article.)
I also agree with Yolanda P - hammers and nails should frighten no one.
