Partnering with Oregon firm Ideabox, IKEA is now making prefab homes. For a breezy $86,500 for a 1 bedroom, you get 745 square feet of fully outfitted Swedish splendor, and nary an Allen wrench in sight.
In other news, President Obama drops by ABC Carpet & Home tonight, and a French hotel room is half white, half graffiti.

Looks nice. The IKEA house looks very similar to the "Lotus House" by Kaufman Designs. Not to be picky, but I would prefer the bathroom was between the living room and the bedroom so dinner guests don't have to go through my bedroom.
I don't know, I just feel that a thief could walk right in with just an allen key.
I had the exact same thought CBREYNOLDS.
People will still try to sell the IKEA house on Craigslist for just a few dollars less than they paid for it new.
@Trishdom: Bikes, garden funiture, gardening utensils ect.
I currently have a small suite with the bedroom between the bath and living spaces. Totally fine if you're a hermit. But if you ever have people over, your 1 bedroom feels no different from a studio. I'd happily lose a little counter space to put the bathroom through the kitchen instead. Best option is to have the bath in the middle, though: neutral location, and acts as a buffer between public and private spaces.
Is it also made of particle board or mdf?
I think this is intriguing! Only time will tell how these stand up to real living. My Ikea furniture is holding up pretty well, so far, so who knows?
the comments crack me up :)
@MIKEINMKE - Totally! Ha!
Hey All! The house is by IDEABOX, a prefab design/build firm in Oregon. We collaborated with IKEA PORTLAND on the design to explore using IKEA kitchen, bath, and built-in wardrobe systems into IDEABOX houses. The new design, called "AKTIV" made its debut in the Portland Home & Garden Show last week. It was very well received.
Quick comment about the bath location. We really wanted to have a laundry "room" which was achieved by locating the bath where we did. Small spaces may require making your bed before guests come over!
There are a lot of great pictures floating around of the completed house. You can visit our website ideabox.us for more.
Thanks! We love Apartment Therapy!
Looks great but I'm not clear why you wouldn't have the kitchen & bath/laundry back-to-back, to minimize the rough-in plumbing expenses, if I could find a nice spot to put one - I'd probably buy the land and do it - I'd love to retire decades earlier than a traditional city house w/mortgage will allow.
For the price, it's pretty darn cool.
OMG ... a house full with IKEA boring staff .... NO !!!
Do we have to check to see if all the parts are there?
"AKTIV"? It needs a non-descript Ikea name... like SAARSGARD
For the last two years my husband, Kevin, has been telling me he wanted to design a prefab house fitted with all Ikea stuff ( he designs automation tooling, and is always thinking up new things/inventions). I thought Ikea wouldn't do it. I was wrong and am admitting it to all the world to see!
Sheesh-FOR all the world to see. Hee Hee Mikeinmke. So true.
Ikea's sold houses since 1996... or so sez wiki....
I went to see it at the Portland Home & Garden show and I actually though it was pretty well done. Also if you want to use this as a second home it is pretty affordable to build on a piece of land and have the furniture right included.
