The buzz around the Apartment Therapy campfire this morning has been the peek into new products coming from IKEA. The retailer just released these photos of their IKEA PS 2012 Collection yesterday in Stockholm and we've all been chattering about our favorite pieces.
Started in 1995, IKEA's PS Collections (the PS stands for Post Scriptum) are the company's nod to cutting edge design at populist prices. Every three years IKEA rolls out a new collection. You may remember some pieces from previous collections - like the SVARVA and MASKROS lamps from 2009.
This year IKEA is bringing us vibrant colors, interesting shapes and fun details. The dresser in the lead photo was one of the favorites among the Apartment Therapy editors. And, personally, I'm in love with the new sofa with the blue metal frame and wonderful stitching detail on the cushions.
No word on when we'll see this new collection in the States but it looks like it'll hit stores in Europe and the UK in May.
Update: Word from IKEA is that the PS 2012 collection will be available in US stores in August!

White Enamel Four-P...
That is a dresser that's crying out for paint. How exciting.
The wire chairs caught my eye--they'd be perfect for an uncovered outdoor space. I wonder whether they are comfy.
@MandarinMarie - I thought the same thing! I wonder how they would do in the elements, though. I see a lot of vintage wire chairs that are great but I have no way of knowing whether they're coated with the right seal to protect against rain.
Oh, if that sofa can go outside, that will be fabulous! Fingers crossed.....
Cute chairs...
Yep loving the sofa and dresser.
I think that dresser could be painted to be AMAZING. Also think the chairs could be great outside.
I absolutely love the dresser! Such a cool design, the surprise red with the drawers is awesome too.
And I definitely live the wire chair - that is just screaming to go on a really fun back porch.
This is Janice Simonsen from IKEA. Thanks for sharing our exciting new PS line! It should be available in US stores in August.
Very nice especially the chairs...
Love those stools! I want a bunch!
That dresser looks amazing and like it will be a pain in the arse to put together. Can't wait to see it!
I love the chest-of-drawers and the boxes with coloured drawers. Not sure about the sofa though and I don't really get that table system.
But the chair is like a slouchy cartoon teenager in chair form, it's brilliant.
They look aweful - like a 90s furniture comeback!
I agree! I can't wait to see what folks do to that great dresser...fun!
That dresser begs for a contest!
Janice from Ikea - is the blue sofa an outdoor item? Or just indoor? Also - do you have any indoor/outdoor rugs coming?
I kind of HATE the dresser as is, but it does seem to have potential. Change the legs to something less stubby, and get rid of all those knobs in favor of maybe a leather pull or just a finger hole and it could be amazing.
With tweaking, that dresser would be a great replacement for the changing table in my daughter's room! I love the blue sofa - if anything I can paint it to ward off rust and buy some cushions to put it on the front porch. What a great interpretation of nesting tables - want those too!
What the..
That couch is just odd, like it's trying to be futuristic? Also, the fabric on the couch reminds me of cheap pillow inserts for some reason.
LOVE those wire chairs those, they are shown indoors but they would be so amazing on a patio, especially paired in two different vibrant colors, yummy.
Love the couch . . . .
I just can't. I really dislike all of this. It looks cheap and childish.
Thw wire chairs are cute for outside...but I have to agree with @paigep...
Wow, I am going to buy the fuck out of that dresser and get some sample-sized paint/stain pots.
I'm with anne_me and paigep! The whole lot just looks like a load of shoddy tat that makes the trashier pieces of furniture that came with my 'rental', look stylish (and THAT takes some doing!!). Oh, and what that 'dresser' is really cying out for is a pyre...someone please put it out of it's badly-designed misery!!
Wow, that sure isn't a "just look for it in the middle drawer, honey" dresser. I love it!
I am so buying that dresser!
I'm thinking paint each front different coordinating colors--I'm in a violet and yellow mode.
Plus cover 2 or 3 of them with patterned contact paper or wall paper. Then replace the knobs with mixed matched hardware.
And I don't like the legs either. Maybe I'd replace them too, but maybe they wouldn't be noticeable one the thing was painted.
I like the dresser. I like it more if you can rearrange sections.
Reminds me of a tansu in some respects.
I'm also seeing it as a sideboard.
Ikea, bring back your small round stacking stools!
I don't think that sofa will stand the test of time, looks cheap
I love how people get so worked up and offended by some new furniture.
Sure, that couch won't work in your victorian home but in my simple modern studio it might be perfect. I'm moving in a few weeks though, doubt I can wait until August to have a couch. Oh well
Heart, heart, heart the dresser! Can't wait. What colour will go well with the red interior?
I love IKEA to death. I do. That dresser is awesome. The current PS cabinet's are awesome. Everything else up there. Really??
The chairs are sending me straight to IKEA.
how fun is that dresser!
i swear, they keep coming out with things now to meet the needs of ppl because of all the ikea hacking!
Love the sofa! I hope the cushion covers are removable and replaceable. I am looking for something inexpensive with sturdy indoor/outdoor fabric/replaceable cushion covers for my tv room. I have 3 large dogs that are pretty rough on upholstery and I'm afraid a leather sofa might be a chewable temtation. Those outdoor chairs are super too.
missgrosie, i don't believe they are marketing it with the tagline "will withstand the test of time"
that said, most ikea stuff is actually pretty durable. my dad has had his library with the same 4 billy shelves for 25+ yrs... and he has some damn heavy books!
my ikea stuff is all faring well, and i have 2 kids.
it's about affordable fun, not heirloom quality investments
Oh wow. Ikea managed to get away from their black/white/red colour choices they usually give us. Finally they're going the way all other furniture stores are going since the last few years and add some more pastel and neon colours.
I'm just waiting for the day they throw out that overrated Billy shelf.
That dresser would be a nightmare to assemble. I like the colored boxes (last photo) -- a row of those green ones would suit me.
I must have that dresser! And those chairs! And the boxes! And someone to buy it all for me :)
Here's a link to a page on Ikea's site where you can see more (all?) of the collection. Some things pictured above, like the blue chair and the couch, come in more colors:

oops, didn't realize the comment system here didn't auto-detect links. http://images.ikea.com/assetbank-ikea/action/browseItems?categoryId=96&categoryTypeId=1
There's actually even more photos (much better ones) posted on this Swedish language Ikea Fans facebook page
That chest is mine. Stand back!...
Every time I sat down on that couch, part of me would be listening for a boarding announcement.
That dresser is one of the fugliest things ever. I can't envisage a hack that would make me like it.
O Negative Ones, I'm confounded - all these downers, do you also go to WALLPAPER, AZURE, Design Bureau & OBJEKT to complain about the original designs that inspire IKEA? If everyone decided to speak up when they disliked something, I think the whole site would have to be put out of it's misery.
A boarding announcement? Hmmm... what legendary Designer and Architect is known for his ubiquitous airport seating that you can still find after decades of use- because of the quality and incredible comfort?
Most of these designs are echoes of what has been out there for the last couple of years- the jumbled dresser is now a design solid (probably through Established & Sons), the couch is a chillaxian echo of the new interpretations of Le Corbu's w/the shocking new colors on metal and cushion, along with Herman Miller (?) putting out collections of MCM classics -for outdoors. The metal chairs appear so very much like a Bertoia Diamond ran headlong into his Bird Chair: and so we get twice the metal & a finer mesh! Yay, etc... as usual, IKEA pays attention and pops out both recent huge design wins or classics as soon as they can figure out how to offer us a lovely or daring thing that is well above the quality of a Tarbluh or Walnoot and yet still affordable.
The wall storage, I may cover the inserts with leather or burlap just to tone down the color. My space can't take any more visual noise, but I love the cubes. Wish the inserts were galvanized metal.
I alo plan on honing the stumpy legs on the dresser and am relieved they did not attempt this other award-winning dresser that pops to mind: one which had all the drawers freely a'jumble and held together with a huge leather strap. Assemble that!
What compels people to buy this crap? Because supporting anti-union anti-environmental corporate behemoths like IKEA is somehow hip? Somebody clue me in.
@Florian is right... the naysayers here clearly aren't fans of IKEA, so why click on the post? Anti-IKEA rants are getting boring. There's an opinion, and there's a snoozefest.
You don't go to the shop and buy eggplant, even though you don't like it, so why click on a post about a brand/product you don't like?
I love the potential that dresser holds - so much fun!! And while blue isn't my choice of colour, that sofa is nice too... especially for a younger person/teen's house/room.
If release in Europe is May, and US is August... I'm guessing it won't be available here in Australia for a loooong time.
that dresser will be so popular - everyone will want to get creative with it since it already has a air of whimsy about it. as soon as i saw it, i wanted it, but that was just based on it and not my space. it's good to see all of these new things.
How big do you think that dresser is? Without any refference I cannot tell if I'd use it for clothes, scarves, or jewelry. I would definitely take of the legs and mount it to a wall ro use as an entry way piece. That's after and painting and swapping out the hardware of course.
That dresser is going to end up in a lot of craft rooms, kids rooms, and some small apartment kitchens for storage.
I didn't like the wire chairs at first glance but I can see them on nice garden patio. surburban_war provided a link to more images AND I WANT THOSE CHAIRS with the arm/armrest. They look delicious.
Do we every get some of this stuff in Canada?
@TRUEPEACENIK I wish that dresser was modular too. Or I wish it had a flat top so I could stack them more easily. It's one of my fave kind of Ikea pieces - one I instantly want to modify/hack and make my own.
Ahhh... the "dresser" looks like it's on a tabletop - so maybe more of an organizer than dresser?
Anyone who's been shopping around for dressers has seen its inspiration
http://bit.ly/zVmy8d
which is quite awesome, mind you, after a few mods... mostly painting.
I'd love that dresser, if it were modular, so I could stack it here at home and create a custom wall.
The wire chair looks like a maxipad with legs. Especially after they pour the blue liquid on it.
Awful. All of it.
Well done...in keeping with their original intent...let the feature bear the cost.
That dresser is modern patchwork waiting to happen. I might have to buy it just so I can fabric cover the drawer faces.
@ SUNNYDARK
If the USA receives the new items, then, we in Canada will probably 1) see it in 2014 or 2) never
"Shoddy tat"??? Maybe compared to heritage antiques, but not everyone has/loves those you know...
I love the dresser. (I think it sits on a flat, probably 6 inches tall, so dresser scale, not jewelry box.) Might be great for my miscellaneous sized craft supplies...
I also like the wire chairs for patio use. (Indoors, not so much, unless maybe in a more neutral color...)
I love IKEA usually. But this did curb my desire to go to my in-laws just to go to IKEA. Guess I'll have to go to hang out with them... :)
Ooooh it's most definitely shoddy tat! Their stuff is crumblicious. However, it's certainly a gigantic step up design-wise from the equally shoddy ware at Walmart. It's, you know, eye candy tat. I really like the little yellow maxipad chair :P
OK... I actually love IKEA. I loved the 2009 PS collection.
This. Stuff. Is. Horrible.
There are about 4 pieces that are OK (the wall lamp, coffee table, bowls/plates, and side table) but the rest is actually icky. It makes me want to cry.
None of this shines even a dim light to the PS Maskros or the other 2009 stuff. Ew Ew Ew... so disappointed.
"A boarding announcement? Hmmm... what legendary Designer and Architect is known for his ubiquitous airport seating that you can still find after decades of use- because of the quality and incredible comfort?"
LOL, Knifemouth -- just because someone "legendary" designed a piece of furniture doesn't mean it's going to be universally adored. And a simple expression of dislike isn't a complaint.
... And Ikea continues to bring the ugly.
@GHOME, this is Janice from IKEA. No, the sofa is not designed for outdoor use. What does make it unique is that it makes use of pocket springs, in order to reduce the use of foam in the upholstery.
The rugs are non-woven polypropylene, so I wouldn't use this in an outdoor space. No word yet on if we will have more indoor/outdoor rugs coming in 2013.
Sorry! @AGHOME!
@Murphy's Lost Found- The dresser is modular. The base piece is 51"W x 19"D x 33"H.
The add-on six drawer unit is 20 1/2" W x 19"D x 19" H
Was at my local IKEA(in Sweden, sorry)and they have their new outdoor range on display :)

Thanks @suburban_war for the links to more images of the collection.
The sofa also comes in a white frame/beige fabric combo that looks much better. Also the wire chairs appear to be loungers with orange and white stripes in one image, which is a better look for them too. And there's some kind of modular (I think) coffee table or side table that has built-in plant pots and a depression that could work as a catch-all or to hold the ubiquitous glass or vine balls. But I'm most interested in the 'glass front cabinet'- it looks like a bunch of shadow boxes with framed-out doors for each chubby, and it's shallower at the top than the bottom. I think it might be the best item in the whole collection.
@JANICE S from IKEA - when will the collection arrive in Vancouver, BC Canada?
Is it too late to post another comment, I wonder... On revisiting this post and scrolling through the comments posted since I last commented, there seems to be bit of a worrying trend here of people with an 'either you with us or against us' mentality who appear to assume that, anyone critical of the furniture featured in the post must therefore be anti-all-things-IKEA . Small wonder why then, they are baffled as to why we alleged 'IKEA-haters' should read IKEA-related posts and dare to criticise! It is possible to form an opinion about an object, irrespective of its maker (or brand),...no, seriously, IT IS!!!
On durability and potential heirlooms, my beloved IVAR shelving is still carries the collective weight of my music and books without warping a fraction and hasn't shed so much as a single splinter in the 12 years that I've had it so, I guess that I'll be leaving it to my niece eventually!
To add to @JANICE S's post, for those who haven't seen it yet, here is an alternate configuration displaying the modularity of the dresser.
Any idea when / if this collection will be available in Australia?
@gretamc it's already released, and the prices are ridiculous!!! $700 for that dresser?? I'd rather buy a couple Rasts and glue them together haphazardly. @Janice S what gives?
