IKEA SEKTION New Kitchen Cabinet Guide: Photos, Prices, Sizes and More!

IKEA’s new kitchen cabinet system hits the stores on February 2nd. To help you plan your dream kitchen, as promised in our earlier inside scoop post, we’ve got need-to-know details ahead of time. Here’s inside info on everything from price to measurements, features to finishes, along with plenty of photos. Let the new kitchen designing and dreaming begin!

The idea behind IKEA’s switch to SEKTION is to simplify the current system, making it easier to for all consumers to get the custom kitchen they’ve envisioned at an off-the-shelf price point. By making the cabinetry boxes part of an evenly sized, easy-to-work-with-each-other modular system, making nearly endless combinations of shapes, sizes and configurations is now much more possible and accessible. The system has been designed to let everyone create the kitchen that works best for their space, without sacrificing function. And, while they were at it, they added some cool new features, improving the system as a whole at the same time.

Modularity, Dimensions & Sizing:

Height

Cabinets are available in 4 heights: 15, 20, 30 and 40 inches.

Cabinets can be put together in practically any custom design that you can dream up. (The brand new planner tool launches on the same day that the system goes on sale, February 2nd.) The boxes are designed to fit next to each other smoothly and easily. For instance, two stacked 15 inch cabinets fit perfectly next to a 30 inch cabinet -or- one 20 inch cabinet can sit atop a 40 inch cabinet, and that combo fits exactly next to 4 stacked 15 inch cabinets and so on, and on!

Depth

Cabinets are available in 2 depths: 15 inches (increased from 12 in the current Akurum system to provide more storage space) and 24 inches

Drawers and Doors

Doors and drawer fronts can be placed anywhere you like on the modular system’s cabinets. For example, drawer heights start as small at 5 inches and drawer fronts come in multiple sizes up to 60 inches tall, allowing you to cover several drawers of varying sizes with one larger front if you wish to create a more streamlined design with plenty of powerful storage options hidden inside.

Finishes and Design Directions

In the SEKTION system, the cabinet boxes will be available in both light (white) and dark (dk brown) options to better match the exteriors and/or make a design statement on their own when used as open cabinetry. Matching cover caps will be available to hide the pre-drilled holes.

Doors and drawer fronts will be available in a wide variety of styles and colors. Due to the modular aspect of the system, an overall modern look can become more modern (think Italian design: a mix of open storage and multiple cabinets or drawers hidden behind expansive solid fronts) and traditional lovers can go more traditional (think vintage cottage: multiple smaller drawers and hutch-style configurations of upper and lower cabinets that appear more like furniture than built-ins). Accessories and handles to complement the different design directions will be available.

Installation Ease

New suspension rails for both upper and lower cabinets help guide installation, making it easier than ever. To use the new system, measure and attach rail to the wall, then hang the cabinets on the rail and lock in place to ensure straight, successful placement (even for DIYers!) for the final installation .

Price Points

Due to the modular, custom-possible nature of the system, every kitchen can and will be different, depending on your needs and individual design decisions. To illustrate basic price differences, here are sample 10’x10′ kitchen systems, with a total price attached to each. These totals include cabinets, fronts, drawers, interior shelving, hinges, toe kicks, legs and cover panels:

More New Features

Favorite features from the AKURUM system, such as soft close drawers and drawers and the 25 year warranty are included in SEKTION along with new features and options. Here are a few notable ones:

Drawers are available at two price levels, depending on features, which provides more options and a way to help fit a new kitchen more easily into smaller budgets.

Drawers within drawers allow you to store less frequently items in the main lower drawer and smaller, more often used pieces on top, covered by a single front.

New VARIERA in-drawer organizers (in glossy plastic or bamboo) make the most of drawer space. They come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and heights, all designed to work together.

The lighting options for SEKTION have also been upgraded. The two new series of lighting include in-drawer lighting, corner modules, USB and electrical outlets and a nifty remote control for dimming.
