According to The Verge, furniture giant and weekend maze to soft serve ice cream reward retailer, IKEA, will be transitioning to an all-LED lighting inventory by 2016. Citing environmental reasons for the transition away from incandescents and even energy efficient CFLs, IKEA is betting LED lighting technology will scale up in performance (20 years life) with prices dropping down (their 3.5 watt/150 lumen LEDARE is currently $9.99, still pricey). I appreciate their commitment to the environment, and I also see that sometimes companies are the catalysts that drive positive trends, however, I think that there are some applications where LED's just aren't right for the job. One of the reasons I love IKEA is for their selection; this announcement is definitely bitter sweet, for me.
