A lamp on the dining table is something we think can bring an extra level of warmth and intimacy to the dining room. But what about bringing that feeling to outdoor dining, and doing it without cords or a need for electricity?
That's why we love the idea of the new SOLVINDEN table lamp from IKEA. It runs on batteries that store energy from the sun and use it later when the sun's gone down. Perfect for romantic dinners under the stars.

Just don't assume it's a "useful" lamp. It's dim and gets dimmer as the charge wears down (in about an hour if you had it in sunlight all day...). Not ideal for bedside use, therefore, since it may not actually lamp in the middle of the night if you need it.
I snagged one of these on my last ikea run just cause I thought it looked cool, and I have been using it as a desk lamp at night, for when i rarely need one. I also hope to use it this summer for barbecues, to put outside when it starts to get dark.
I believe the intention of this lamp is not for indoor use, but to be used outside, in a porch or balcony, for providing lighting for outside spaces. I have other lights in Ikea's soldivden lights, and really like them. I especially like the "paper lantern" ones. With a full day's sun, they stay on for several hours.
