We love the big, diffuse light from paper lamps like Ikea's Regolit Lamp Shade. It's not always easy to find a place for oversized globes, but this photo from Ikea shows them used over a bed. Perfect...
The Regolit pendant lamp shades you see in the pic up top come in 11, 17, and 23" diameters. And over the bed, they create a nice soft ambience in the bedroom. We love a grouping in a location like this for these lamps.

Would you hit your head on that when you sat up in bed? Looks like bad feng shui...
You'd hit your head more on the two spotlights that hang over the headboard.
It looks cool in a photo, but I think it would be annoying in real life.
Yeah, I tried something similar over the bed and really hated it.
Do love clusters of these though - planning to put about a dozen (in several different sizes) up in the living room where there's plenty of ceiling height to accomodate.
Ooh, I'm so chic. I already _have_ a ginormous Reglit above my bed (praise be for super-high ceilings!). When the security light is on outside, it glows a little and looks like a big ol' moon. Love looking at it on lazy Saturday mornings too.
Honestly, how many lights are surrounding that bed? It looks ridiculous.
I have the 23" and it works well, though it is lonely. It is only 4" or so from the ceiling, and with a ceilings at 5 ft 9, it works fine.
I should get some thick wire and hang 2 or 3, I suppose.
I can just see my cats jumping up and trying to bat them around!
what do you do with the chords? I imagine they can be hardwired but my hair is big enough without the inevitable electrocution...
Not at that height - just awkward. If your ceilings are high enough to hang them closer to canopy height above the mattress, that could be interesting.
I guess if they were hung at a realistic height, it wouldn't make such a good photo.... that said, I think the lighting in that bedroom would stop you from being very, erm, ACTIVE if you take my meaning - esp. those lights in the middle of the headboard!
I had one of these above my bed in my dorm room. Such a cheap option, but not necessarily the most elegant. If I had the money, I prefer the look of the Castore at Room and Board:

Or even the simple white globes they sell at most lighting stores.
I have a grouping of 12 of the Regolit shades above my bed (6 of the 11" and 6 of the 17" interspersed). I didn't buy any of the light bulb cords. Instead, I used 2 strings of white Christmas tree lights to illuminate them from above - it gives a nice soft light. Plus, it helps that I have 9.5' ceilings, so hanging them close to the ceiling gives lots of clearance above the bed. Using the strings of lights leaves only one cord to camoflage.
Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of it uploaded anywhere to link to...
hmmm...I thought it said regolith. which I think is a large old rock. oh well.
i plan on getting this done with 4-5 regolits, but how in the world do you creatively and neatly cover the hole in the ceiling where the junction box is, as shown here ?
