If you don't have a Philips Ambilight LCD TV but agree with home theater designers that backlighting the panel helps to reduce eyestrain, the Illuminaire Lighting system is a DIY solution that doesn't require the purchase of a new TV.

Two 23 inch LED bars with remote control and lighting adjustability is what you get for about $350. Not a cheap option so this DIY solution would probably do the job for us just as well but for much less.
