The Ilma Grove house by Andrew Maynard Architects is a spacious two story home with a small footprint. Utilizing reclaimed brick from the property, and natural passive design, it's green from the ground up.
The planning and orientation of the Ilma Grove home was based primarily upon solar efficiency. Solar panels supply much of the homes energy, LowE double glazing cover all the windows, and internal flooring is locally sourced bluestone. The dark bluestone acts as a large thermal mass, soaking up the sun during the winter to passively heat the home In the summer. The sun's angle is such that it does not come into contact with the bluestone, allowing the floor instead to passively cool the home in the warmer months. The brick is re-used from a previously demolished structure on the site.
