Humans are a weird bunch. We love security and safety. Familiarity and comfort. But we also shrivel without freedom and excitement. Adventure and novelty. We need the mix of both. And when you've been too comfortable, too static with your home's look for too long — it can affect you. Unchanging interiors breed restlessness. They grow discontent with first your home, next your life. Design ruts aren't just boring — they're dangerous. Here's how to bust that rut and shake up your style.

1. Start shoving
Looking for the most effective, fastest and free way to flip your perspective on your home? Start rearranging furniture. Switch whole rooms full of furniture with each other. Put furniture pieces in weird places. Just play. The result will quite literally be a style shake-up, but even more importantly, this exercise will get you thinking about your home differently, which may spark some creative new design solutions and ideas that will get you out of a rut.

2. Switch it up
Same idea as the furniture arranging tip, only a lot less dramatic. Take a look at your art — and put new (even unusual) things in existing frames. Place something in a vignette that shouldn't normally be there. Put a house plant in a weird or high up spot. Do things that you wouldn't normally do, and like the step above, it'll get you thinking differently and maybe coming up with even cooler, fresher design ideas.

3. Do something weird/out of character in your space
We tend to be attracted to things that feel comfortable to us. So if you often find yourself gravitating to the same sorts of colors and design elements, you might, after awhile, start feeling like nothing ever grows or evolves visually. So add in something you'd never normally add to your space (or think you can't). Try something different, even if you know it won't ultimately work or stay in the space. Sometimes you have to see something wildly out of place to see a room's real potential.

4. Make or DIY something you've been too scared to try
Same idea as the tip above, only this time, push your do-it-yourself muscles. This might even be an easier thing to try to add something wild to your home because you won't have to spend a lot of money and you can change it up as you create it, trying out a wild color or look first, and then taming it a bit once it gives you a fresh perspective.

5. Get some distance to refresh your mind and spirit
Go some place you've never been before that takes you out of your comfort zone. Remind yourself of who you are. Discover new things about yourself. Remember what you love. Delight. And then come back home, see the space with fresh eyes, and start adding in more of you. Because ultimately, our homes should change over time because we as humans are always growing and evolving, along with our tastes and style.
