Few things are as fun as letting loose with a registry scanner. It's a little like the fantasy where you get locked up in a supermarket and can eat whatever you want—that is, until you realized you've got a tummy ache from snacking on endless Cheetos and popsicles. Setting up a wedding registering without an organized plan can be a bit like that. You'll get a ton of really great stuff but not always items of substance. Only when you've settled into your love nest as a married couple do you realize the really important things for your home, like a super powerful vacuum or a Chemex coffeemaker.

We asked to five married couples about the one thing that they wish they had the foresight to include on their registry. Here is what they had to say:

Luxury sheets

Couple: Lindsay and Philippe of Richmond, Virginia / Married 13 years

Registry regret: "When we got married and moved into our first apartment, the bedroom was so small that only a double bed could fit—and only just barely. In hindsight, I think we should have registered for some beautiful (double-size) linen sheets, since they're more durable than cotton and they hold up after literally hundreds of washes. It's the sort of item I wouldn't think to spend money on up-front and purchase for myself, but as a gift I'd end up appreciating it every day."

A powerful vacuum

Couple: Chelsea and Ryan of Toronto, Canada / Married 10 years

Registry regret: "Just this year, a whole decade after getting married, we invested in a Dyson animal vacuum. It's made a serious difference in our cleaning routine to have a vacuum that can actually handle the shedding of our Boston Terrier, Otto."

Coffee equipment

Couple: Drew and Lance of Alexandria, Virginia / Married 4 years

Registry regret: "We have become more particular about our coffee and would have loved coffee accoutrements like a grinder, a French press and a Chemex. Not to sound like a super annoying coffee snob but some days, you just want the higher notes of French press coffee and other days you might prefer the smoothness of cold brew—it would be nice to have those options at my fingertips, especially now that we have kids."

Picture Frames

Couple: Jane and Shane of New York City / Married 8 months

Registry regret: "We have so many gorgeous photos from the wedding and we are now thinking of how we want to display them. It would have been nice to have registered for some really beautiful frames so that we could place the photos right into our new gifts, which would always remind us of not only our wedding but also the people who gave these beautiful gifts to us."

Furniture

Couple: Audrey and Nael of Richmond, Virginia / Married 7 months

Registry regret: "I wish we had cut down on the number of items we put on our registry, and instead put fewer items that were higher quality for people could contribute to. I didn't really need eight new bath towels and eight new plates, but I would have loved a big wooden dining table and chairs that will last us the next 20 years."
