Q: I've been searching high and low for a pair of slate (light or medium grey) colored coverlets for my boys' room. They will soon be sharing a room with twin beds, and I'd like matching simple bedding that's easy to wash, since I'll brighten up their room with accessories. I'm in love with the Room & Board Percale Quilted bedding, but it's $150 each. There has got to be something cheaper out there! Target has a Room Essentials quilt that would work if only they had neutral colors, but the price was right at $25 on sale. For reference, they will have matching Room & Board Pogo beds in maple. Please help, thanks!

Editor: This grey coverlet is $80 which is a bit better - readers, any ideas for budget grey coverlets?

You could buy the white ones from Ikea and dye them?
I'm in the same boat but I'm looking for a full/queen for our master bedroom. The Diamante that was mentioned by the editor has been the cheapest I can find. Interested to see if anyone finds a cheaper option.
So IKEA has a grey one for twin $49.99. I have this in the king size and it looks really nice.

I agree with dying them. If you find sheets you can sew a cover out of that. We have king size bed and I was having a really hard time finding affordable sheets. I went to a store called Fallas (its kinda getto) and found JC Penny brand name sheets for fifteen bucks! I am thinking Ross might have some of the same great deals. Even if they are white or if the flip side is the gray.
This one from Land of Nod is more of a blanket than a coverlet, but this is the one I want for my son when he moves to his twin bed in a couple months.

Thank you, everyone! All your suggestions have been helpful. I never thought about dyeing some, but would wonder with how much I'd wash them -- would they fade or bleed?
That Land of Nod one looks so comfortable and not too thick, which is important where we live.
How is the material on the IKEA one? Does it pill? Is it soft? I guess for that price, it's hard to complain.
We bought twin duvet sets from Overstock.com. They are Grey and White striped and a somewhat solid grey on the opposite side...(looks JUST like the West Elm ones, only 1/3 the price!) We were searching far & wide for grey for our sons' room (3 boys) and these were PERFECT! (& SUPER SOFT, 100% COTTON) I'll post pics later if I get a chance...here is the link ****CRUD, just checked for it and it's not on the site anymore. Maybe call them? Looks like these: http://theveryyoungatheart.blogspot.com/2011/05/hilow-grey-bedding.html (2nd pic)
Kohl's has a few options that come in grey in the Home > Bedroom > Bedding > Coverlets section of its website, but most are full/queen or king only. However, this one is nice (without the frilly accents) and the twin is on sale for $45:

Good luck!
(Hmmm, now I am wondering if it is blue in real life and not grey. . . )
It's not a coverlet, but this is the comforter we bought for our son and I am really happy with it! http://www.target.com/Room-Essentials-GREY-CMFTR-FEATHER/dp/B002XZFKKU/ref=br_1_14?ie=UTF8&id=Room%20Essentials%20GREY%20CMFTR%20FEATHER&node=2240103011&searchSize=30&searchView=grid5&searchPage=4&sr=1-14&qid=1313809929&rh=&searchBinNameList=target_com_category-bin%2Ctarget_com_size-bin%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Cpattern_name-bin%2Cmaterial_type%2Cprice&searchRank=pmrank&frombrowse=1
It's a bit on the pricey side, but Pottery Barn Kids just started carrying a light gray duvet cover with tiny white dots. It's listed in the girls section, but would work just as well for boys (minus the pink accents!) http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/clara-duvet-cover/?pkey=dgirls-duvet-covers
Thanks, jtfries - I really like the West Elm ones, too. That may work, but I'd have to really think about how dirty the white part would get :) My kids are a mess!
mere1975 - I think you might be right about the blue.
babsmith726 - If we go with a comforter, that may be perfect!
Love the suggestions, keep 'em coming!
I went to Ikea today and saw the gray coverlets and they seemed fine. I don't know if they'll pill, but the texture was soft enough and the blanket has some heft to it. I thought it was good quality for the price. The gray is darker than the R&B coverlet you were looking at-- more charcoal than light or medium gray, but definitely reads as gray and not black. FWIW, I have several Ikea duvets and none of them have pilled.
I saw the one at Target and for twenty five bucks you cant beat it !
We have Ikea coverlets, sheets, duvets, duvet covers -- never had a pilling problem at all. Highly recommend them, including their duvets. Great value.
I have the Ikea grey twin coverlet for my guest/soon to be baby room, and recently bought the king size for our bedroom. So far no pilling, it isn't as soft as my pottery barn coverlet but looks really nice in general and is comfy to sleep with. I'd definitely recommend it for the price!
walmart has a cheap grey plushie blanket. i think it's $15. - hard to beat on the price end.
