You may have already seen this floating around the blogosphere, but it seemed worthy of a revisit. When Chris' obsession over the George Nelson Platform Bench grew (but his ability to buy one didn't), he decided to build himself. But when he realized he had no real carpentry skill, he turned to the one building tool he was well-versed in — Legos.

Using over 1,400 Legos, this "bench" may sufficiently function as neither bench nor coffee table, but it's one heck of a decorative piece. Luckily, that's the main purpose it will serve since, according to Chris of My Humble Ablog, it goes "in the boring room that nobody sits in anyway."

OH MY GOD DONT SIT ON THE BENCH!
*crunch*
I do love legos though! This is cool.
Maybe he'd be able to afford the real thing if he didn't have a house so big he has extra rooms that no one uses! All the rooms in my home get used - all two of them, lol.
He can afford 2 Eames plywood chairs, but not a George Nelson bench?
But: very clever!! It makes me want to go out and buy tons of legos.
i really hate it when people say things like ...
"judging from his comments, the photos of the room and other furnishings of his .. it sure doesn't look like he should have a hard time buying the real deal."
but. i just said it.
if this was approached from a different angle - the 'i just wanted to see if i could pull this off' angle - it would be more believable to me. plus, how much money do you pay for 1,500 legos? anyways. i'll stop judging now.
Very interesting centerpiece but I have a feeling the cost of a "lego" bench is not far off from the George Nelson piece.
Pretty creative and fun though, hats off for the idea.
Does anyone know the brand and name of the sofa in the picture? I love it!
You're actually not too far off with the "I just wanted to see if I could pull this off" comment. But other motivators did include "it's less than half the price of the real deal" and "it's more unique". Further down on that list was "maybe we'll make it on Apartment Therapy".
The two Eames chairs in the picture were given to us as a gift. Richard and Barbara, we are eternally grateful . Lastly, you're right...we probably could have afforded a real Nelson Platform Bench. Heck, I could afford a six dollar burger every time I go to Carls Jr. too...but that doesn't mean that the $0.99 spicy chicken sandwich isn't a smarter choice sometimes.
Thank you AT. :)

From the guy's blog, it doesn't look like his motivation was being unable to afford the real bench and wanting to make a cheaper version. Here's what he said:
"I just had to build one. I don't know why, but I did. Like a pregnant teenager on her tenth month, or a gentleman with irritable bowel syndrome after a 12 course Mexican dinner; this thing was in me...and it was coming out!"
It was a creative urge.
This makes me so happy...love seeing things made from Legos!
Back in the day, I made most of my 9th grade projects out of Legos - Lego cell model for Biology, Lego mini-golf course about reflections for Trigonometry...so anyone willing to give these little building blocks a shoutout in an unconventional manner gets my thumbs-up.
i didn't mean to criticize the creative interest or artistic merit behind the piece - so i hope my comment didn't come across that way. i sort of could tell that the creator was doing it more for a challenge and fun and realized that if he really wanted the bench he could make it happen somehow.
obviously it was a feat that was well pulled off, so if you had fun with it then i say great job. AND i imagine more people actually respond to it then to the real thing.
It's lego furniture that actually looks cool! Great job and lovely home!

SOFA. Where's the amazing sofa from?!?!
Ohh our wanna be Jane Bi-Sectional! We purchased the piece at a local furniture store nearby.

There website is nothing to write home about...
We briefly wrote about it on our blog:

The sofa actually goes in our family room. :)

This is fun. :)
@Dolores: I actually really love your couch more than the Jane bi-sectional! I love that your couch doesn't have pin tucking on then seat. The "original" looks too busy for my taste :)
Personally, I would not want to have to clean that lego table one bit! It looks cool, but must be a real dust catcher! Enjoyed all the links for furniture though, thank you people!
this is very cool! chris, if you like legos, you should check out www.bricktestament.com. its all bible verses done in legos. even if you're not religious, its cool to look at. never would i have thought the plagues could be so cute.
